2020-07-30 Temple assault Pt.2

General Summary

The game session begins after the party has entered the Forgotten temple, clearing the first two rooms. After a short rest in the room with the dais and fallen statue, Otho gathers the caltrops that he had spread in front of the ajar secret door. He cautiously entered the hallway beyond and scouts ahead. The 30 foot hallway is empty of any traps or details that he hasn't seen from the previous rooms; the walls are again rock and mortar. He continued to sneak past the next room, an anti-chamber devoid of any furniture, already picked clean by the new inhabitants of the temple. Light and noise floods in from the short hall beyond. At the end of the short hallway, Otho stopped at the portcullis blocking the way, though the bars were bent out of place allowing creatures his size to easily slip through. Hiding in the shadows next to the portal, he peered out to the next room. He spied at least 4 goblins in the midst of gambling, lazing about, or teasing small animals(rats, rabbits, etc) that they might have found. Returning to the group, Otho relayed the information that he had gathered, and an attack plan was concocted. Rein placed herself at the left of the opening of the short hall; Jonathan on the right. Otho used a piece of broken pottery he had retrieved from the previous room to attract the attention of the goblins. Four of the goblins mirrored the tactics being deployed by the team by placing the far wall at their back to allow them to launch arrows through the bars and down the hallway. Two other goblins ran for help; one down the left hand corridor, and the other down the central. It only took a few seconds to drop the four defending goblins, but within a few rounds, the room began flooding with five more goblins from the central hallway. With noise coming from the left hallway, and basically being useless in a ranged fight, Otho dropped more caltrops at the mouth of the central hall and then moved over to the left hallway to prepare for an attack from that direction; hoping to get a kill or two before the goblins could engage the others. The first wave of the goblin attack was defeated by the team's ranged attacks, but a second wave from the central hallway followed. The caltrops did their job and slowed the enemy attack; a couple of the goblins hurting their feet. During the second attack, Hornnugg was again the recipient of a major wound, this time slashing through his chest plate and in to a lung. Ale was able to drop Hornnugg's attacker, then make her way over to cast Cure Wounds on Hornnugg, healing the slash enough to return him to the fight. The third wave arrived as the second was was defeated. Goblins, a hobgoblin, and a bugbear came up the hall on the left; now defended by Rein and Otho. More goblins and a hobgoblin poured out of the central hall. Rein's arrows, and Otho's thrown dagger stopped the goblins in the left hall before they were able to reach the end of the hallway, leaving a hobgoblin and the bugbear; each of which was able to close ranks to melee range. Rein dropped her bow, slid a dagger to Otho, pulled her shortsword, and confronted the bugbear. Otho, with Rein's dagger, took on the hobgoblin. The team was able to defeat the third wave of attackers; the dungeon went quiet. After a few seconds of holding the stance for the next attack, the team relaxed when they realized that it wasn't coming and they could take a breather. They began to tend their wounds and looting the bodies. This is where the game session ended.

Rewards Granted

The total experience points from the kills since entering the temple (both times) were tallied, and divided evenly among the player's characters. Otho and Ale have crossed the line in to level 3, the other characters are on the way to level 4.
