2020-10-14 - Return Of The Scouts Report

General Summary

* Due to time commitment issues and dictating these reports from memory, the majority of this session report data has been lost.   * What I do remember:   After scouting out Daymaw and the road leading northwest around Lac Farscape, the team encountered a thick fog, and determined that it was a magical construct.  Pushing through the fog, they arrived at Ironshore, a small lake side fishing community.  The citizens seemed to be in a zombie-like state and unloading cargo from lake-going ships, and being directed by men on horseback in various plate armor.   The adventurers followed one of the cargo laden wagons out of town, continuing north, to a sizable villa.  Being from this area, Rein recognized this was the property of the Blackmore family.  Rein has history with Margin Blackmore.   Scouting around the property from the edge, the team finds that people are being brought in, corralled in to cages, then led in to tents.  When they come back out, they are in the zombified state that was observed in Ironshore.   Deciding to return to the Highwaymen camp with this information, the team circles through the western woods, and back south to their stored wagon and gear.   Before leaving the border of the fog, the team encounter two guards from the villa, and a fight ensues.  Our group is able to incapacitate both guards, tie them up and begin to interrogate them.  The guards don't release any information that the team didn't already know, and as leverage, Rein savagely slits the throat of one of the captives.  The other captive does panic and tries to bargain for his life.  This time, the team releases the guard to return to the villa and got back to the trek to the wagon.   The guard, fearing for his life if he returned to the villa alone, followed the party.  When the group would camp for the night, he would rest just out of reach of their fire light.   On one of these nights, he was attacked from the dark.  Screaming out as a giant spider made advances towards him, he tried to fend it off with a stick that he had found nearby.  The party, hearing his scream, came running.  As they approached they were attacked by more of the same spiders.  The fight consisted of the adventurers, the nearly unarmed guard, and 8 giant spiders.   The fight was very one sided at first; every time the spiders would attack, they would just fade out of existence, and the group could not react.  Eventually, the team began to anticipate the spiders' attacks and were able to get a few good blows in before they would disappear again.  The group was able to take out a couple of the spiders, but were overwhelm by the number of spiders and the toxins in their bite.   This was the end of the our adventurers.  They may still be alive, or they may very well be dead.  As no one escaped from the fight, the mission had failed.   This is where the session and the group ended.   *This was a TPK from an over zealous DM who did not bother to realize that the NPC encounter CR was nearly double that of the group's average level; even with 2 NPCs fighting for the party.   When given the choice of creating new characters, or playing the next session as a scenario to escape the spider's nest, the players chose new characters.  The next game session begins with the new characters.
