Saba

Saba is the largest island in the Southeastern Region, and the seventh-largest island in the Great Ring. It is the bulk of the land in the Sabaen Archipelago, and has long been the center of power throughout the region. Multiple empires have ruled Saba, with the most notable being the Telmunic Empire, the Nagarajya, and the Malikate of Saba, which currently controls the island.

Saba is a melting pot of different cultures and races. More Naga live on Saba than anywhere else in the Great Ring, but there are also humans from several ethnic groups, and even some Selkies and Aethry. The great city of Tarshish is one of the busiest ports in the entire Great Ring, and nearly anything can be purchased at the docks and markets there.

461 years ago, the Malika of Saba invaded Saba with armies drawn from the Telmun Islands, the Kaphtor Islands, and the rest of the Sabaen Archipelago. She is a Clarati sorceress, and supported the invading force with magic, including many terrible devices such as the Glass Needles. The Malika's forces overthrew the Nagarajya and King Wainaba to establish the Malikate. In the centuries since, she has remade many parts of Saba and Tarshish in her own image. Most notably, she has established the Burj Alhikma, the largest gathering of true mages in the Great Ring. It has over a dozen members, all of whom have studied under the Malika and have proven themselves loyal to her. She has placed them in high positions throughout the Malikate, where they can use their powers to strengthen her rule and advance her goals.

The Naga have adapted to life under the Malikate, but resent their loss of power and autonomy. They have preserved many of their cultural practices and religious beliefs, and there is a persistent legend of the Nagavirosha, who will drive out the Malika and her armies, and restore the Nagarajya. So far, this has not come to pass. Those Naga who are most devoted to the return of the Nagarajya choose to live in isolated communities such as Al-Ashavan. These settlements are typically unfriendly to humans and other outsiders, and are carefully watched by the agents of the Malikate.

Geography

Saba has a diverse landscape with dense jungles in the north, while the south is home to the Al-Kubra, a vast and mystical desert surrounded by towering mountains and cliffs. The coastline is dotted with small bays and rocky cliffs, with many small islands. The great city of Tarshish is located on the eastern coast of the island and is the center of trade and commerce. The tallest mountain is Jabal Al-Malak, part of the range that separates the Al-Kubra from the rest of the world. The mighty Nahr Alab has its source near the great peak, and runs northward through the most fertile portions of Saba, including some of the most productive rice lands in the world.
