Sabaen Archipelago (sa.ba.juːn ˌɑɹkɪˈpɛləˌɡoʊ)
The Sabaen Archipelago is a group of islands that straddles the Southeastern and Southern Regions of the Great Ring. It is dominated by the island of Saba, which accounts for nearly eighty-five percent of the archipelago's total area. While there are over a thousand islands in the archipelago, most are small and uninhabited, and only the nine largest have an area greater than 10 square miles. The entire archipelago is ruled by the Malikate of Saba and the unageing sorceress, the Malika of Saba.
Points of Interest
When coming from the north, the first sign you are approaching the Malikate is usually the lighthouse on Zaiba. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Ring of Light, and was constructed during the time that the Telmunic Empire ruled the area. Zaiba is the peak of an enormous underwater volcano, and the god of Zaiba's lighthouse has given the light it casts a deep red hue.
If coming from the west, the island of Ajagar is the first port of call. This island is sacred to the Naga people, who claim it as the birthplace of their ethnicity. It is a little southeast of the abandoned island of Salak, where the notorious Sunda Lighthouse once drew ships to their doom.
The largest city in the archipelago is Tarshish, on the island of Saba. It is one of the four largest city of the Great Ring, and may be the largest (there is some dispute over how this is to be measured, amongst those who care about such details). It is a port city, and the capital of the Malikate of Saba, and has a reputation for having strange and wondrous goods in the sprawling bazaar. Almost every ship that enters the Malikate will stop in Tarshish, making it one of the busiest ports in the world.
Finally, there is the Al-Kubra, the magical desert that lies deep in the heart of Saba. This region is known to harbor many strange creatures and phenomena, and is even said to be larger inside than its circumference would allow for. While access to the Al-Kubra is highly controlled by the Malikate, a few intrepid adventurers do find there way into it, and some of them even return.
Geography
The Sabaen Archipelago stretches over a thousand miles from east to west, with the abandoned island of Salak marking the westernmost point, and Qutra the easternmost. From north to south, it spans nearly five hundred miles, with sacred Ajagar being the most southerly island, and rocky Zaiba in the north. Saba itself is in the southwestern portion of the archipelago.
