Jabal Muqasam (d͡ʒəbəl mʊkəsəm)

Jabal Muqasam is the highest point on the island of Qutra. Its name translates roughly to "Split Mountain", referring to the divided peak. According to the local lore, the mountain was once the prison of a terrible beast, held in check behind layers of magical protections, before some curious or incautious fool accidentally set it loose. The force of the monster's escape broke the mountain into two, leaving behind the split peak. Different stories describe different monsters, but generally agree that the creature has hidden itself in the sea neat Qutra, and occasionally causes shipwrecks, possibly while planning revenge upon those who caged it.

Notable Spirits

The spiritual landscape of Jabal Muqasam is mostly distinguished by the curious lack of any spirits of the mountain or the surrounding landscape at all. The Oontlok and other Devas avoid the mountain entirely, and those people gifted with the ability to sense spiritual activity claim that the area around the mountain feels like it is dead and that the souls have moved on. According to the goatherds who are most often the only people near the mountain, those who are wounded in sight of the mountain will frequently die suddenly, even when their injuries were not fatal - it is described as though they were candles blown out by a strong wind. Furthermore, they believe the spirits of those who die near the mountain cannot enter the afterlife, and are swallowed by the mountain itself.

Geography

Jabal Muqasam rises above the massif that dominates central Qutra, and even reaching the mountain's base is a difficult trek over the limestone plateaus and the mountains that surround it. There are no settlements near the mountain, and the only people that are common in the area are goatherds. Those who have climbed to the split place have reported that there is a vast open pit directly between the two peaks, that seems to drive deep into the earth. None that have attempted to climb down into the abyss have ever returned.
