Ajagar (ˈɐ.d͡ʑɐ.ɡɐ.ɾ)
Ajagar is the southernmost island in the Sabaen Archipelago. It is sacred to the Naga people, who claim it as the birthplace of their culture. It is also an important port of call for ships traveling between the Southern Region and the Southeastern Region, and the city of Ghrāyam is the westernmost port in the Malikate of Saba.
Notable Spirits
The Naga of Ajagar honor the Deva named Ajagara as the patron god of the island. Ajagara manifests as an enormous serpent two arms and jet-black scales, who wears a crown bearing precious gems. When angered, he is surrounded by an invisble flame that can render anything nearby to ash and smoke in seconds. He is fiercely protective of the Naga, and during the purge of the Nakaal by the Clarati, he grew to encircle the entire island, creating a wall of searing heat that boiled the sea and prevented anyone from approaching the land. The priests of Ajagara sacrifice goats to the Deva on the twelve holy days at the beginning of each month of the Sabean Calendar. Goats are considered to be sacred to Ajagara, and many consider goatherds to be blessed by the deva.
Geography
Ajagar is hilly, with a mountain range running roughly north to south down the center of the island. The highest point is named Jabal Anjeer, the mountain of the figs. The coastline is known for the unusual pink sand that is found along several of the beaches, something that is found nowhere else in the Great Ring. The interior is grassy, with areas of forest dominated by tamarind and kapok trees. Fig trees are common in the higher altitudes as well.
History
When the Clarati destroyed the Nakaal, they left only small pockets of Kikipua and Zmei alive in the Great Ring. One community that did survive the were the Low Nakaal of Ajagar. The population was reduced to a few communities scattered across the island, across a dozen Bamsam, perhaps no more than three thousand individuals in total. From these dozen bamsam came the Naga. They flourished, first on Ajagar and then across the Sabaen Archipelago, displacing the humans who had claimed the land after the destruction of the Nakaal empire. Until the arrival of the Malika of Saba and her armies, the Naga kingdoms were the most powerful force in the Southeastern Region, and they still dream of the day when they will ascend to power again.
