Mbaru Islands

"In the aftermath of the incident on Tubu, the Mbaru Islands have suffered greatly. All commerce has functionally collapsed, and only those villages that can sustain themselves by their own efforts remain." - excerpt from Report #7862 on the Incident on Tubu.

The Mbaru Islands are a group of sixty-five islands in the southeastern part of the Mangimoi Archipelago. It is dominated by the island of Tubu, which until recently was the center of the Kingdom of Gailo. Approximately three years ago, every animal on the island of Tubu suddenly vanished, from the smallest insect to the largest beast, including every person. The government of the Kingdom of Gailo has since moved to the island of Gamfene in the Lamofo Islands, and Tubu has been left empty. The smaller islands around Tubu have also seen people depart, either from fear or need. The trade that used to pass through the region no longer comes, and many have had to seek new places to earn their livelihood.

Points of Interest

Prior to the depopulation of Tubu, the most visited location in the area was the city of Kota Daya, former capital of the Kingdom of Gailo. Today, only the bravest dare walk the empty streets of the city, peering into abandoned temples and palaces. Most items of value have been removed, either by officials of the kingdom or by looters. While it still has a certain grandeur, it doesn't attract many visitors.

Of the other islands in the area, they too have been devastated by the disappearance. Villages that depended on trading their produce have found themselves without merchants to sell to, and many of them have been abandoned. While fishing villages have mostly persisted unscathed, much of the land in the Mbaru Islands was used to grow spices such as cloves, cinnamon, turmeric, nutmeg, and mace. Without anyone to sell to, these agricultural communities are struggling, and many have been abandoned. Some merchants have taken to visiting the villages individually to purchase the spices, but most find it easier and less time-consuming to purchase in the larger ports to the north and east.

Geography

The Mbaru Islands lie roughly between the Lamofo Islands and the Harafora Islands, which are to the west and east respectively. To the north are the Sama Islands, and to the south is the Hema Sea.

I really like that you've thought about the consequences of an entire population disappearing. Chilling.

Thanks! I have been thinking about this a lot, and when it is time to write Tubu’s article I plan on diving into the ecological aspects of losing all animal species from a region.
