Mangimoi Archipelago (ˌmaŋ.ɡiˈmoi aɾ.tʃiˈpel.a.ɡo)

"It's amazing how much people will pay for tree bark and ground nuts, if they are tasty enough"
— a Mangimoi spice merchant

The Mangimoi Archipelago is a group of islands in the western part of the Southern Region. There are over a thousand islands in the archipelago, but the majority of the land is concentrated in the half-dozen largest. The archipelago is best known for the variety and quality of the spices grown there, attracting merchant vessels from all around the Great Ring.

Points of Interest

There are two major ports in the archipelago, Tobel on the island of Gimoi and Bunam on the island of Ngofa. These are controlled by the Mangimoi and Ngofangare peoples respectively, and are in constant rivalry. Each city has become wealthy from the spice trade, and over the centuries they have tried to use that wealth to outshine each other. Visitors to the region are advised to visit both cities to see the opulent monuments and buildings they have erected in the course of their competition.

In the southeast, the Nuhu Islands boast of the grand temple at Lamaraja. The building is said to date back to the days of Muria, and may be one of the oldest continuously used structures in the Great Ring.

Geography

The Mangimoi Archipelago covers a large area, measuring nearly six hundred miles from west to east, and a little over five hundred from north to south. Despite hundreds of small islands, over ninety percent of this area is open ocean. Navigating through the center of the archipelago is hazardous for large ships, but smaller vessels are constantly travelling between islands. Many of the smaller islets have unique ecosystems and species. More than a few of the spices the archipelago is known for originate on these tiny, uninhabited islands, and the people who gather them for market will go to great lengths to conceal which island harbors a particular kind of tree or flower.

I like that, instead of fighting, the two groups just keep building bigger and better monuments. I like that style of trying to outdo each other.   Also I bet their markets smell amazing.

Oh yeah. I’m going to go into more detail in the individual islands, but I’m planning to have a great variety of spices. My current list is cloves, cinnamon, mace, anise, and nutmeg, but I’m planning to do research into spices that don’t immediately pop to mind.
