Ythras Settlement in The Lost Lands | World Anvil

Ythras

Ythras Village is a modest place with ancient stone walls and a single gate, located near a high but short range of hills in the Suilleyn countryside. It is not a particularly remarkable settlement other than for its proximity to an ancient construction in the nearby hills, a place called Ythras Tower. No one knows whether the tower eventually borrowed its name from the village, or vice versa; the tower is older by far, but might have rested unknown for years, its original name forgotten. And, in truth, the town’s original name stands in some question as well, since scholars have turned up alternate spellings for it including: Yrthus, Yrbys, Myrbyus, Mithrus, and others, calling further into question the true ancient origin of the name for both town and tower.

During the mud season, the hillsides are virtually impassable due to the potential for lethal mudslides, and during the winter a dreadful cold surrounds the hills, apparently pulling coldness from the surrounding air as far away as the town itself. As a result of the hills’ cold-pulling effect, Ythras Village enjoys a considerably warmer climate during winter than any of its neighbors.

The entire Ythras region is a part of the Barony of Paribas. The community is governed by the Sheriff of Ythras Town on behalf of Baron Lundric of Paribas, who resides in the castle of Caer Paribas three miles to the south. The current Sheriff is Benou the Bald, a bearded fellow with a prodigious capacity for pear brandy (one of the town’s best products).
