The Backdoor is a naturally occurring microwormhole, sometimes characterized as a subspace crease. Entering from the Sol System travels through Redspace to the Wolf System. If travelling the other way, the journey is through Whitespace. This defies current understanding of extradimensional space, and the matter is being studied by top minds. 
While the effluvia from the Sol side gate is simply some Whitespace material that contributes to the Oort Cloud, on the Wolfside it releases the weird energies and 'creatures' of Redspace. This makes holding Wolf a constant struggle, not just from the RAIs that sneak through the gate but also from those who would exploit them. 
Additionally, the gate is judged to be the single most threatening vulnerability to alien invasion. Without monitoring, it would allow a force to build up 14 light years away from Earth before suddenly arriving on the proverbial doorstep, starting any such invasion with the humans on an extreme back foot. With the defeat of the Kypridot not too long after the fall of the Solar Commonwealth, 'warrior species' from the width and breadth of the Kypridot Empire have been compelled to come see what the fuss is about.
