Mental Trauma

In 2007 in her reality, Savannah's parents died during a villain's attack, buying time for their 7-year-old son and nearly 3-year-old daughter to escape. Subsequent villainous actions also got Savannah's older brother killed, putting the helpless toddler in the custody of an interdimensional villain named Multiplex.
Multiplex used various superscience gadgets collected from his journeys to speed Savannah's physical development until, by 2009, his minion "Grimalkin" appeared to be a robust nine-year-old preadolescent girl.

In August 2009, Multiplex sent Grimalkin to spy on the interfering busybodies in yet another dimension -- a team that included yet another version of Thunderstrike -- and report her findings back to Red Siren.
But when that target group proved to have parallels to Savannah's own murdered parents, of course the five-year-old girl flung herself back into Maman's arms! And teleported them both directly to Papa! And told them both all about the terrible Omega that is Multiplex!

Savannah does understand that these are not the same individuals as her original family -- there are little differences. There is the very big difference that they do not remember the first three years of her life!
But they, too, love her.
They, too, would die to defend her.
Her elder brother in this reality is also sometimes patronizing, sometimes bossy, sometimes not a great friend. Savannah's peers at school tell her that all older siblings can get like this -- that the friendship the catkids have built between them is more important.
Tante Tina, who has a LOT of elder sisters, sympathized with Savannah a bunch the first time that Grayson yelled at Savannah for wanting to go along to his friends' outing. Tina explained that all siblings need to be the center of attention sometimes, that it's best to occasionally let them have a turn, and most importantly that each sibling needs to have a hobby and some friends that are not in common with anybody else in the family or else they never get to be interesting. Tante Tina then took Savannah and cousin Bubba off to the Metakids Salon to get fancy updos, which was a kind of fun that Grayson's playmates could not match!
And Grand-père says that their moments of not getting along are reasonable and healthy. He assigned some good storybooks as homework on "Having Siblings" so it would be easier for Savannah and Grayson to both remember that their friendship is pretty good actually.
Savannah does not remember having an extended family. She does not know if that is because she was too young to have clear memories, or because the trauma afterward stole most of her good memories away from her, or if it is because she did not have a Grand-père, a Tante Tina and Oncle Thomas and cousin Bubba all living close enougy by to visit every schoolday, and for that matter more extended family in the form of emails and sometimes-visits from Oncle David, Tante Sarah, Grand-oncle Jean-Paul, and all these other adults.

Speech

At home, Savannah mixes American English, Parisienne langue française with a smattering of Cajun, and the gesture code into her informal sentences because she has grown used to a household where all three languages are commonly used. Around visitors or in mixed company, Savannah follows the first precedent set by an authority figure: mostly she speaks American English, occasionally she restricts her speech to French if that is what an adult is using, and if she wants to communicate something privately to family in mixed company then she uses the gesture code.

History

In 2004 in his reality, Blackjack's wife grew unsettled and hid herself in nearby forest about a month and a half before her current pregnancy's due date. Long before Blackjack could track her down in the heavy rainstorm, the pregnancy abruptly failed -- and Jarissa nearly died as well in her attempts to defy her own biological limits. The family grieved intensely and privately; every early April afterward, they again mourned the daughter they could not have.
Their happy, optimistic world turned itself upside-down.
The Paxtons chose not to share this incident with most of their colleagues.
Based on the medical advice of Rissa's primary care physician, they determined that future pregnancies would be just as risky. Blackjack ruled out any such option -- additional children would be adopted, not body-births.

… on a Wyldfire mission that started in Brussels before it diverted to many locations across the Eurasian and African continents, Feral advised her husband that she needed to investigate a hidden observer.
One who could not be what they seemed.
Feral slipped away to stalk their stalker, prepared for the possibility that an enemy psionicist wielded a terribly painful illusion.
Feral came back via teleportation -- not one of her own abilities! -- with their lost daughter in her arms. Savannah promptly threw herself into Papa's protective embrace.

The world turned right-side-up.

History

In mid-August 2009, Maman and Papa went on a little overseas work with Wyldfire. As was entirely normal when both his parents had business out of town, Grayson stayed with the co-parenting household: Oncle Thomas, Tante Tina, and his adopted-brother-technically-cousin Bubba. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity for a Young Justice Adventure?

The Wyldfire mission got complicated and dragged on, as they often do.
Papa sent emails every day, and the parents called when they were able to do so. Grayson could hear how much his parents wanted to come home. When the jet is broken and the team suffers a threat of Escalating Drama, it is only right to stay and sort things out.
Grayson was not thrilled. But he understood.

Finally they all came home.

They brought with them a Little Sister!

Savannah is another reality's version of the lost baby from when Grayson was little. She is physically about the same size and developmentally comparable to Grayson, only one growth spurt smaller. But in her heart and mind and feelings, she is definitely younger -- so Grayson understands that it is important to be not just patient, but also tolerant. Savannah had too many adventures at too young an age, which only makes her needs stronger.
Whenever she has a nightmare, Grayson is always the first person there to stroke her whiskers.

Also, Savannah taught Grayson several really nifty tricks that combine acrobatics, sneaking, and teleportation!
