A club with an innocuous label to obscure the fact that it's a series of junior superhero teams, designed to give young people training, supervision, and an outlet for their powers. Usually leads to leadership positions in the existing superhero organizations.
To Start
See
Induction for how young people are introduced to the organization as a whole. The whole idea behind AC (because I'm not going to take the time to write it every single time) is that it's meant to look like just another one of those well-meaning groups there to deal with "troubled teens." Some of the
Academics Club Members do actually have some difficulty, but a lot of it has to be fabricated to give kids a reason to join.
In short, it's meant to look plausible, and also not like something you would just want to join on a whim, or that your parents would want you to join because that's where the strange ones go. Not anyone's favored extracurricular, in other words. They make these fantastic posters that look like some fifty year old got their hands on a clip art treasure trove and went wild, or else just keep using the same marketing from the eighties over and over so it looks super out of touch.
Meetings can be a lot of fun. You train in your powers, work with a team, play games and interact with other kids who are like you in some small way. You're meant to come away from your time in the club with an understanding of how it works to be a superhero, and if you use that professionally or not, you can still be counted on in an emergency.
A Few Current Members
A few of the local chapter includes:
Current chapter leadership is
Nicholas Onager and
Michael Halifax-Wilcox (now that he's finished time traveling, anyway) (also a former member).
Club Traditions
While each individual AC has its own experiences and battles, there are a few traditions and trips that can be expected as a part of the typical AC experience. One is to
Dye the Statues, a way to poke fun at the superheroes we're meant to look up to. Another is the annual retreat at
Toralvitch in
Vielene/Valgrozna.
Battles Faced
We're kids. We're not supposed to face a lot of fights, but it happens anyway. One of the bigger ones was
AC versus Epoch. Taking on the
Epoch Society probably wasn't the wisest thing, but it had to be done.
Another battle featured in the
Morgan Hammond Memorial Park, helping Mike (a guy who then helped lead the group) defeat
Marco Holguin.
One of the older stories is
The Tower in the Woods. It's legend in schools across the world, but no one really believes it's true. But we know it is, because one of the first AC classes defeated an alien serial killer.
We also had to deal with the
Broken Mirror Cult recently. Word to the wise? You can't gain superpowers by cannibalizing a superhero. Doesn't work. And also we will hunt you down and make sure you're arrested and probably vandalize your stuff.
