Session 01: Theft of the Scrolls of Juzo Suko Report in Sundered Lands | World Anvil

Session 01: Theft of the Scrolls of Juzo Suko

General Summary

Mogul Pan Mo'Kai of the House of Cats called in members of the Order of the Sacred Page to discreetly investigate the theft of the newly-acquired Scrolls of Juzo Suko from the House of Cats Library. Three veteran guards and two librarians were killed by the attackers during the theft. The mogul offered a reward of ten thousand gil plates and unlimited access to the library for each member of the group.   The six investigators soon discovered information on the martial arts styles used by the attackers. One was a white-clad man using the rare Raging River style, the other was a green-clad woman using a powerful and unique crushing style related to insects. The House's senior servant, Zamadan, offered them a Promissory Note to cover the expenses of their investigation. Necromancer Vulpis Red raised the three guards as undead samurai, to allow them to expiate the shame of their failure through service beyond death.   The group discovered a scrap of distinctively-embroidered white fabric left behind accidentally, and the court wizard Tau Chul was able to use it as a scrying focus to see the location of the individual who had worn it. The man in white was able to use an advanced Ki technique to disrupt the scrying, however, and almost destroyed the fabric.   Bard Cebril Hawkson was able to use the damaged scrap to identify the maker, Mu Khan, in the most expensive and exclusive part of Bajapur. While he charmed and distracted the clothier, Mortimer Thornehaven silently entered his shop and used the book of swatches of exclusive designs to identify the thief as The Steel River, and the account book to gather his address. Meanwhile, Mu Khan revealed to Cebril that Steel River was known to frequent the Su Chi Academy.   Returning to the House of Cats, the investigators revealed the identity of the first thief to Zamadan, who was delighted in their progress and swiftly produced a letter to Master Raman of the Academy, to ensure his cooperation.   The group visited the Academy and secured the cooperation of Master Raman. However, Pang Zhu, the young student and disciple of Steel River, realised what they were doing and triggered a trap. Throwing a cursed ribbon at the Elder Su-monster which served as the Academy's mascot, he fled while it burst loose in a rage. He did not get far, though, as the monk Kayle Mar'Ven of the Guardians of Eonnoe gave chase and swiftly subdued him.   Junko and the fairy barbarian Emeny Pureflower led the battle to stop the raging Su-monster, assisted by the cleric Mortimer Thornehaven and Vulpis' samurai archers. Cebril realised that the Su-monster was under some kind of spell, and succeeded in partially disrupting the cursed item. The group switched their efforts to destroying it, and were able to stop two of its effects before Emeny pulled it entirely off the Su-monster. The great spirit ape stopped its rampage and huddled in embarrassment as it realised what it had done.   Emeny was unprepared for the resilience of the cursed ribbon, and it had wound itself around her wrist and put her under its thrall before she could stop it. She in turn began to rampage, but the group fended her off until she was able to break free of its effects and it self-destructed.
