Outer Dimensional Threats in Sartova | World Anvil

Outer Dimensional Threats

In the Planar Danse of Histories , there are sixteen Themes which influence the world, ideas given a formless power and consciousness. The Arcane Conservatory, in all it's achievements, has not yet formulated a theory which properly describes this topic, which lies at the crux of all things arcane and divine.   As far as our Arcanists can glean, the Themes are conscious outer-dimensions, which have waxing and waning influence on the world, attributed to the Guardians by the faith. However, pieces of these Themes can bypass this 'superluminal barrier' and find their way to Sartova in a form appropriate to their aligned Theme.   You know these as a myriad of forms. The Olianan Lanterns that come after disaster to aide the bloody and broken. The Archons summoned by Tarahn's Order of Champions to slay heretics. The Feyfolken creatures in the wilder places of the Bay of Evandyr. These extra-dimensional entities are alien, to the point of being comprised of entirely different materials than mortals. The Typhonic Devils are spiritual in nature, their pure form being that of black flame and smoke, not of flesh.   They are the Other, not of this world and not intended to be. You cannot kill them in a way that lasts, you cannot understand them, and you cannot control them for long. Despite this, the Warden-Commander made the mandate following The Battle for the Fifth Ward  and Golryon being infested with Slaadi of Limoseht who found their way physically to Sartova, that all Wardens be equipped with Elysian Bronze weaponry. With them, extra-dimensional foes may be more easily destroyed, and possibly even sent shrieking through a sparking rift back unto the dimension of ideas from which they spawned.
These entities can find their way into the God's Chronicle through few ways, as it is rather difficult for them to overcome the Guardian's protection through force or guile and bypass their guard.   Worshipers of the Guardians or the Themes directly, in the case of the elves, have long been able to call down a consolidated entity of their Deity's power in times of need. This bypasses the Guardians through a Super-luminal bridge, connecting the Story and Theme as the Guardian so worshiped allows the energy through. Such a creature is only present for a very short time before the will of the world reasserts itself and the creature is sent hurtling back unto their Theme. Upon death, the same occurs.   Very recently, with the discovery of the Rune of Control, Arcanists with a quiet mind and a strong will can pick and choose entities of the Themes with which to call across the Super-Liminal Bridge. There is a great debate whether this is done with the Guardian's permission, or simply forces it across the Planar Danse. Despite this, it is the same as the divine route in every conceivable way.   It is possible for extra-dimensional entities to project themselves across the Luminal Barriers and force their own gathering of energy inside the God's Chronicle. An entity summoning themself through great force of will to Sartova, cannot be killed like this, and will simply return again and again. Thankfully, this is rare, and many precautions can be made to protect areas from dimensional influences. This is how Golryon survived the Dark Times.   In Manifest Zones of specific Themes, where the aligned Theme is more present than seen anywhere else in the world, it is possible for entities to slip through undetected, typically on Convergence Days. They seemingly do not do this willingly, and are always surprised when it happens. It seems that when a Theme is overtly present in Sartova, things slip across the Liminal Bridges through the closest points of connection. The Faith teaches that all connections between Story and Theme are the Guardians' designs, however. When such an event happens, the entity's energy or matter is fully upon Sartova, and wholly gone from the Theme, and as such will be discorporated upon death, never to form together again. It will die if slain.   Lastly, a concerning number of these entities exist in Evandyr, in startling concentrations outside the Bay of Evandyr, outside Old Erinion's ring of fortresses. What is more concerning is that they are frequently encountered in lairs or dens hundreds of years old. These entities will die when slain, shown by the energetic effects their deaths will emit, but the mystery still stands how such a high number of extra-dimensional beings found their way to Sartova, and then survived for so long. The longest reported dating of a Devil's Hive in the western-most reaches of The Azure Forest, was 1,300 years. It is up to the historians, desperately clawing at the veil upon history of the Silent Times, to discover how such a large number of extra-dimensionals were allowed into Sartova in that distant past. Here in the Bay, we are safe.   But that doesn't mean we should not be ready for them. The Wardens shall obtain the materials, spells, schema, runestones, and all power necessary to keep Gol alive.   Weakness: Elysian Bronze, in all it's forms. Additionally, all entities from the Themes are specifically weak to materials, spells, and influences from their opposing Theme.   IN AETERNUM. AD INFINITUM.
