The city of Golryon is attacked from beneath by monstrous slaadi, hungry and starved for magical energy to feed upon. This begins in the Fifth Ward, being the most dense area of the city, the slaadi were drawn to it when denied a food source. They flayed living townspeople, ate chunks of flesh of the fleeing civilians, and generally terrorized the city until the Wardens could halt their progress.   It took a full week of quarantine and war for the Wardens, hundreds of other mercenaries up to the task of defending their home, and scattered militia groups to beat the slaadi back below ground. By then, however, the damage had already been done.
