St Reine Shelter
St Reine (aka Regina) is a Catholic saint and patron of the poor, shepherdesses and torture victims.
The diocese of Okinami runs a homeless shelter, soup kitchen and outreach program on the southeast edge of the downtown area. It is primarily funded by donations, but does receive a stipend directly from the diocese. Donations of clothes, personal items and food are all accepted and distributed.
The building is a repurposed school. Prior to the Japanese Occupation, the diocese of Okinami ran a boarding school for middle and high school grades. When they no longer had enough students, they had to close the school but used it as a hostel for displaced people. The old dormitories host transient guests while the old classrooms provide accommodations for families between residences. The basement cafeteria serves not only the residents of the shelter, but anyone who walks in.
Volunteers to help serve meals, receive, sort and hand out donated items, and clean are appreciated. Volunteers to staff fund raising and awareness events are also appreciated.
