Chuo River Park

The Chou River runs through Okinami, coming from the mountains to the west and joining the Yamagiri River in the valley. On the east side of the city, the Chou River spreads out over dense bedrock forming a flowing lake that is, at points, very shallow. Building and development are prohibited in order to protect and preserve this unique feature. Instead, there are a few maintained trails, foot bridges and public gardens.   The Park goes all the way into the mountains, including the basin known as the Chou River Headwaters, which is the primary reservoir for Okinami. Swimming is permitted, undertaken at personal risk as there are no lifeguards. Fishing is catch and release or personal consumption only. Motorized boats are prohibited. Overnight camping requires a permit and permits are limited. All dogs must be leashed and are not allowed on the upper trails.
