Tapira (Ta-pira)

Origins:

A formally an occupied territory under Alicornia, they were conquered by Alicornia for their large dust fields and its people were used as slaves while others, specifically dangerous and violent radicals fought the occupation in a series of legitimate revolutionary tactics and unjustifiable acts of Terrorism not just against Alicornia but their own people. After the fall of Alicornia Proto Tapirans revolted against former Alicornians and the Insurgents creating a new nation, the Nation of Tapira.   The Initial years of the nation's existence were dotted with continuous radical insurgencies and Coup'detats from within the Provisional government until the First Sargon of Tapira, Sargon Atikka the Great seized power and established a hierarchy within the Nation. She also took up rule with her loving wife and Queen, Somnambula, the Pillar of Harmony of Genorsity. It was Sargon Atikka's hard work that saw the formation of social institutions, Public education, healthcare and infrastructure.   A series of offensive campaigns took place to extend Tapira at the end of Atikka's life, appointing her son Abdullah as Sargon. Abdullah led a militaristic period in Tapira's early life-- fighting against Former Alicornians attempting to re-secure the lands. In addition to that Abdullah led the first holy crusades into Alpacan attempting to capture Arindel, formally known as Jordsana the home city of his people prior to Alicornian colonization.   While he never succeeded in reaching Arindel, he had grown Tapira is into a large Nation under his rule, at the end of his life he appointed his oldest Daughter Sharieen as Sargon, her rule was a more economic one but also a defensive one. Establishing a long network of defences to defend the newly acquired territory against Proto Naqah War bands that were ravaging the territory. Her rule would establish the final design of the flag and the Establishment of the national anthem.   She also saw to the reformation and legitimization of Tapira's Religion 'Al-Shamar' it is a fusion of two Arabic words, Al Shams and Qumar, Al Shams meaning the Sun and Qumar being a name that means moon. This is because Al-Shamar is a local interpretation of the Celestial Church that appears to have a few vague similarities to what old-world studies describe as Islam. The nature of the religion has largely been lost but certain symbols and phrases have managed to survive the passage of time and find use within Tapira.   After the first 3 monarchs Tapira was stuck in a constant state of war with Naqah Alpacan and bandits as well as insurgencies from within that rejected Al-Shamar and instead worshipped the God of Death, Hasida. After the Arrival of the Lexeans stabilization occurred as Naqah's invasions became a rare occurrence and peace with Alpacan was enforced by the larger more powerful nation. Despite what history may suggest, Lexer and Tapira maintain a good relationship as Lexer steadily comes to respect Tapira's ways and culture and vice versa after finding side-by-side against similar enemies.   Tapira since then has become a bastion of Knowledge and study, though the Canterlot Academy remains superior, Tapira's academy still has much to offer its students and has its own unique spells and techniques to teach. It is also known as a bastion of Science, where Science is seen as a good thing as all Tapirans wish to travel the stars and go on a great pilgrimage to the moon and near the sun.   The current Sargon, Sargon Masira Aman is working to increase education within Tapira believing that greater opportunities and education will help Tapira rise further from the days of old and has been instrumental in improving relations and cultural ties with Alpcan hoping for a prosperous future for Alpacan. In 4478 Tolvana officials visited Tapira and gave 360,000 bits to the country in reparations in Proto Tolvana's role in aiding Alicornia's colonisation of Tapira and for their actions after the fall of Alicornia and trying to recapture resources from Tapira recognising it as a legitimate nation and good friend to Tolvana and her people.   In Return Tapira gave back said money saying that they share blame too, in terrorist action against their people and the pillaging and execution of Proto Tolvanian Settlers. Recognising Tolvana as a sister nation announcing that the two will forever be by each other's side forming the strongest kind of bond the world has ever seen over such a distance. Not all is peachy within Tapira however. They are no strangers to Imperialism and see a pattern in the north that'll lead to war. Noticing that Alpacan is arming itself up.   They too are preparing for the worse, knowing very well they'll have to defend Lexer and Tolvana, their friends from what they see as a future era of total war.

Government:

Tapira works as a hereditary Monarchy with a council of elders that are selected by every Sargon. Unlike Lexer and its Alpacanian allies, there has been no spread of democracy within Tapira. This is ultimately due to harmony within the current state of affairs. The Government is modestly corrupt and faces few scandals, various rights and provisions have been granted to placate the Industrializing public.   Not all is peachy in government, the current Sargon Masira has yet to provide an heir or even successfully marry. Masira is nearly past their prime and various factions do wish to become the Sargon. The government also refuses to acknowledge Democracy as a solution to this problem leading to appointing to be the only solution. The problem is that Internal Politics is becoming increasingly cutthroat meaning Masira has refused to appoint any heirs at all even their own family.   Alpacan's Monarch, Queen Annette Lionslight in her visit to Tapira in 4489 encouraged Masira to Democratize but Masira refused once again to hear them out. Declaring that if Alpacan means to intervene in Tapira's affairs, they will not tolerate it. They are allies, not vassals.

Council of Elders:

The council of Elders is staffed by these people since 4459:
Kamil Saheed:
Kamil Saheed, a loyal servant of Masira. He was the head Archivist for the Great Library of New Babylon prior to joining the Council. Within the Council, he has helped Masira reform and further education within the Nation. Despite the many years they have worked together, Kamil desires the seat of Sargon because he distrusts Lexer and Alpacan. Believing that Tapira has compromised its sovereignty too much.   He is well beloved by many people but not all people...Should he make a move, it'll be sure to tip the country into a war of Succession with the other Elders as his opponents and vice versa.
Zafir Yassin:
A highly pious and faithful servant of Al Shamar. Before joining the council he was the head Imam of New Babylon's Mosque. Serving in that position for most of his later life. Despite his age, he also desires the position of Sargon. Zafir believes that Industrialization is driving people away from the reverence of the Celestial bodies and their tenants-- slipping into an Atheistic and Agonistic way of life.   He doesn't hate the allies of Tapira, but he hates their way of life. Wishing to convert them to Tapira's religion and form the Super state of Tapira uniting the South against the North. Believing the only way to bring peace to the world is through Al Shamar. Despite his radical views, many in the clergy believe in him and his ways, threatened by Industrialization.
Safira Tehari:
Safira is the youngest member of the council, aged 67 is a member of the Sisters of the Flame, a female-orientated clergy for Al Shamar, she is seen as something of a progressive. Wishing to see Democracy in Tapira, sharing many views with the Lexean colonies after serving with the colonial military against Naqah for most of her life. She was elected into the council due to her propensity to negotiate though she has proven unable to work with the other members due to some members being unable to accept Safira's views.   Also many in the council believe that Women should not be in the council as they are too 'emotional'.
Talah Azzi:
A champion of the people, starting out as an improvised worker in Tapira's Factories. Talah spent his whole life creating worker's unions and worker rights groups-- though only recently has he adopted the Equalist manifesto from Silver Stream in Equalis. Wanting to create a world revolution and spread the tenants of Eqaulism to every corner of the world in one large liberation. His conversion to Equalism was the final death blow to the council's unity as he was the last voice supporting Safira's attempts at negotiation.   He is supported by the lower class of Tapira though few of them know or understand Equalism for the moment, and simply wish to have greater freedoms and rights but don't believe that Democracy is the way forwards.
Kardul Yusaf:
Once a calm individual in Youth, a philosopher of pacifism and harmony. Kardul was changed by his experiences of war against Naqah, Becoming a supremacist for Felios and Felines and a proud Nationalist. He was appointed into the council because of his national pride and love for the country, but ever since his visit to Minuch 4485 and has become a self-avowed Totalist believing that the people of Tapira must become stronger to meet the high standards of Equines in @pfred, Seeing the N.E.P as the future.   Advocating Totalism to the people and pushing for Totalist policies, with high military support within the upper echelons of command. A.N.S.O has declared Kardul as a greater threat than everyone else in the council in their report.   As anyone could see, this has placed the council in a deadlock and while Tapira is stable, happy and prospering for now. Should this vision continue in the event of the Death of Sargon Masira or anyone attempt a coup De'tat it'll fracture the nation into dozens of pieces. The Totalists have Pfredreich's support, The Republicans have Lexer and Alpacan. The Eqaulists have various organization's support, Zafir has no international support and Kamil has Yorta's support.   Everyone wants a piece of the pie, the only question is who will be the ones to claim it? Can Tolvana intervene and save the Nation before the worst or is Tolvana much like Tapira in too much trouble?

Policy issues:

Democratization:

Much like any nation across the world, there is a growing call for Democracy in various sectors of society. Who believes free market Capitalism in a democratic system is the way of the future. Much of this is the result of Education in universities. Many Youths believe that the Lexean colonies is a viable model for the future and envy the freedoms and prosperity that the Colonies possess. There is also adjacent calls for the removal of Yorta and better treatment of all tapirans from both Religious and non-religious parts of society.   Many in the nation oppose this, including the insurgencies of Hasida. The Military is the most problematic opposition as they believe that Democracy will weaken Tapira to corporatist interests and lead to tragedy for the nation.

Religious Decline:

For now and a bit into the future, Religion will remain strong within Tapira but Atheist and Agnosticism are steadily growing in Tapira. Alarmists within the clergy believe this to be the beginning of the end for Al Shamar and an opening of the door to Hasida. This fear is a bit unfounded as while Religion is likely to be less worshipped by future generations. Nothing suggests that Hasida will make a resurgence or that Al Shamar will be prosecuted as the Atheists coming from the universities are mostly Democratic believing in religious freedom. Still, this fact is ignored by fear-mongers to gain higher positions in power.

Worker's Rights:

The Economy is stable and good...for the rich. Unlike many nations near its borders. The Living conditions for millions living in poverty have sent little improvement. To make matters worse, in many places and Tapira worker's rights are a joke or don't exist at all. This has led to growing extortion by Yorta-aligned businesses and an increasingly toxic relationship between bosses and employees across many businesses and institutions.   The favourable and wealthy condition of the middle and higher class has caused this issue to be ignored. Leading to a growing tendency for Worker's strikes and the military's tendency to brutally crush the strikes. A.N.S.O's report in Alpacan suggests that this will likely lead to an eventual Equalist revolution within the nation and proposes the implementation of Worker's rights and unions from a non-equalist lens to be the solution but predicts that Tapira will not compromise with Equalists leading to possible civil war.

Declining Women's rights:

After thousands of years of Societal harmony between the genders, the situation for women's rights is worsening due to a mounting wave of reactionary politics in Tapira. This is brought on by the Church's growing betrayal of women in their faith. Trading away their freedoms for political power in society. Many traditionalists within Al Shamar brand this as heresy and a betrayal of the edicts outlined within their sacred texts.   Many progressives protest this but rights continue to be stripped, and women continue being stripped from positions of power leading to a growing feeling of discontent and unrest. The A.N.S.O report lines this out as another factor contributing to Tapira's steadily rising instability. The area where this is most potent is city policy, where city courts legalistically restrict the rights of others and thus force the Court to have to deal with these matters causing friction between the crown and the City Authorities.

Governmental Deadlocks:

While the situation is still good, on more and more issues, the council is proving unable to resolve forcing Masira to intervene more regularly. The A.N.S.O report suggests that the inadequate governance will continue as there is no way to oust the council and Masira will refuse to change it because of Pride. Meaning that on each politicized issue will just continue to be unaddressed and resolved resulting in mounting radicalization. This forces more pressure on the crown to perform tasks it is otherwise not as suited to but forced to due to the crumbling political system and the Crown lacks the required popularity and credibility to simply dismiss and tear down the system and build a new one in the name of the Sargon.

Masira's Health:

Questions over Masira's health have been raised due to the growing infrequency of his appearances and the more times he keeps coughing or falling into fits. The Authorities insist he is perfectly healthy and will rule Tapira for many more years to come. The A.N.S.O report did outline a growing frequency of secret hospital visits though and estimates that whatever is wrong with Masira, it is most definitely terminal and predicts that on his death. Alpacanian intervention will be necessary.   Most Upper and middle-Class people accept the narrative that he is fine, but many are secretly wishing for his death, eager to take their own positions of power upon the moment he passes.

Military:

The Tapiran Military is vastly experienced having fought Alpacan, Hasida and Naqah various times in their military. Due to Tapira's high exports in magical goods and its struggle to catch up technologically with its Neighbour Alpacan. Tapira's armies use a high degree of magic, specifically Auralight blasters, mages, golems, familiars and otherwise magical forms of defence. They're famed for high battlefield mobility however suffer extreme discord between military units due to conflicting egos and ideas of how to fight a war. This transforms a technically unstoppable military into a disunited mess that can be torn apart if the enemy knows the right pressure points. That is not to say that Tapira cannot defend itself, it has brilliant set-in-stone defences. it is when it comes to offensives do these flaws manifest in the worst ways possible.

Janissaries:

The royal guard of Masira, these soldiers are highly equipped with Magical equipment and Armour. They are famed for their flaming Curved swords that is highly effective against a lot of enemies. A special ritual is done onto these blades that enable them to cut through things they otherwise would have far more trouble doing. To earn these blades requires a decade of training and trials that'll weed out the weak, the selfish and disloyal from the Janissaries. Only certain noble families, specially selected by the Sargon have a chance to send their boys often at the age of 10 to be raised, trained and often indoctrinated to hold supreme loyalty to the current Sargon.   In the 10-year gap, the previous Janissaries are charged with the Sargon's protection and the training of the next generation, should these Janissaries harbour disloyalty to the Sargon and commit any form of treachery, they will be buried alive in a shallow grave with live scarabs. Such instances are rare as the position is highly thought of and wanted. To throw it away is a great risk to yourself and your family who won't be spared.   The Janissaries are often criticized for being blindly loyal to whatever the Sargon Says, caring more about the Sargon than the country. This is on purpose because if they cared more about the country then they could be a risk to the Sargon. They serve as political officers who ensure the military and the nobles follow the Sargon's lead, sometimes through extremely questionable means.

The Sages:

The Sages are the Nations mages, they are the ones who summon, maintain and create the magical defences of Tapira. They study magic and often study both in Tapira and in Northern Equestria to learn their craft. However, unlike most magical societies in the world, Necromancy is not considered a controversial school of magic. In Tapira most soldiers willingly volunteer their corpses in the name of defending their nation. They are also sophisticated users of Flesh Crafting making for some of the most advanced and controversial medical methods in the world.   The problem with the sages is their arrogance, and their inability to communicate with any other military force because of their assumption of supremacy. A cult of Knowledge exists within the Sages and many think they understand the deeper truths of the world that others do not know. Calling outsiders 'Dulls', people who are too blind to know anything. Still despite these flaws, competing against the sages on the battlefield is often a very painful and ill-fated affair.

Cataphracts:

They are the elite, heavily armoured and diverse Calvary horde that protects Tapia. The Cataphracts were formed after Lexer's arrival when General Alendros of Lexer had his Calvary officers who are deeply experienced in Calvary combat against the Naqah war hordes to train and martial a new elite unit for Tapia to better guard against Naqah. Fiercely loyal and warrior-like, each Cataphract is raised from birth to master a beast and ride it into combat. There can be Air land and sometimes even seaborne units in this formation. The most 3 common types of Cataphract Mounts are Camels, Horses and for more lush areas; Dire Lions.   Broken up into various war bands, the selection of a Cataphract's mount is what determines which Warband and Calvary type they will ride with. They don't just do Calvary either as they can dismount and serve as strong front liner troops. if given a bit of time to prepare and organise can also serve as a decent Phalanx unit as well. They tend to be the least sophisticated carrying few firearms preferring bows and crossbows as well as Grenades and firebombs.   They also disregard any other soldiers but their own, seeing the other warrior types as inferior or as career soldiers. For a Cataphract the role of a soldier is not a job but a way of life. A deeply respected and ageing creed. Their high level of success in the past also gives them an inflated sense of ego that often leads to foolish charges into prepared positions and getting mowed down by Crank guns and artillery fire. Until the Cataphracts accept that the art of Calvary warfare is changing with the inclusion of magi-tech this once highly effective warrior society will continue to diminish in power and prestige.

Limitanei:

The reformed and updated Tapiran infantry, the Limitanei is as the name suggests a Northern Equestrian contribution. Princess Celestia over 100 years ago sent the 33rd legionary to bolster and reform Tapiran soldiers after Lexer lacked the resources and manpower to do so, fighting a huge war horde from Naqah. It is a Tapiran interpretation of North Equestria's legionary. Functioning in a similar manner.   Large mobile formation of infantry, supported by fast-moving and highly armed Airships with the necessary runes and equipment to handle demonic forces. They are the most common unit type in Tapira whose loyalties are never quite clear. Supposedly they serve the Sargon but also have sympathies for the people while other generals back the idea of Totalism. For this reason, they are the least trusted soldiers by the Tapiran government but also their only option to guard the large country.   They guard the roads, the streets, the businesses, the forts and many, many castles. To do away with the Limitanei would be to de-militarize vast swathes of the nation that no other force could possibly ever feasibly protect. They are citizen soldiers, who work in factories and fields in times of peace. When fortifications are needed it is the Limitanei who build and defend them. A roaming Army and workforce. They are often kept far from New Babylon though as major big cities like New Babylon are protected by the Janissaries causing animosity and further distrust between the two branches of the military.   They are also staffed by the lower class, even the generals are lower in importance and class compared to any other military unit. Despite their role, they are often ridiculed as stupid, unimportant and dull. The people love them but the nobles hate them and try to do away with them whenever they can, often failing as no one can replace them.

Sisters of Flame:

An elite group of warriors who serve Al Shamar though not necessarily the Clergy anymore. In the religion of Al Shamar, women are often seen as more emotional, devious and vulnerable to corruption. The Sister of Flame set up some hundred or so years before the Equestrian civil war. Is an all-woman clergy to serve in the battle to repent for their gender's shortcomings. Though in recent times the Sisters have changed. Under Grand Matriarch Safira Tahari, the order has come to see the role of women in Al Shamar as a foul corruption stemming from none other than Hasida themselves.   The Sisters fight, heal and care for many during battle and work to promote women's place in society. Believing that All under the Sun and moon are born equal and all can fall from their light or rise up to it. This group pushes the boundaries of what is considered a guardian, never actually being formed or trained by any Guardian at all. having developed their combat methods and equipment wholly separate and while lacking the capability to ascend into Alicornhood. Their ferocity and skill both in physical and magical combat cannot be missed.   In recent times the Sisterhood has been planning for the creation of a Brotherhood of Flame, to unite both men and women in the struggle against Darkness and to preserve the flame of life.

Culture:

Much about Tapira's culture has been discussed by now but there is more to it. This society is a very organised society compromised of complex and intricate family networks of support. What can be recognised as Oppression for Women is a trade-off of responsibility and power to men. There are various reasons for this, on top of the growing distrust of women in general. Most families try to keep themselves together and float by having certain members of the family support different things and manage different things in their lives.   A sort of system of shared responsibility that in theory is supposed to formulate a happy and well-functional family but in reality is increasingly not working. Influences such as Industrialization, shifting culture and youth dissatisfaction turned a relatively harmonious system into something of a mess. Some say it is a great tragedy and damaging to Al Shamar while others argue it was inevitable that eventually, such a strict and rigid system would lose its ability to function in a world that is increasingly complex and different with each passing year.   Whatever the cause family life is a difficult subject in Tapira, what is not is the love of technology and knowledge. Years and years of education and reform have created a hunger to catch up and sail ahead of the nations of the world. Seeking to one day see the Sun and moon in the cosmos with their own eyes.   Despite ongoing cultural issues, it is still quite a welcoming place with the average local being known as highly hospitable and welcoming, able to integrate people into friend groups or indeed families quite quickly. Many are also known to be quite charitable with people filling in gaps left by authorities such as providing taxi services, repair jobs and street cleaning. Festivals are also fairly common and well-known by the world around them.

Architecture

Tapira's cities are often built out of sandstone, stone and metal rebars with quite sturdy rectangular structures. A common joke is that a Tapiran's farmhouse is a small fort which isn't entirely inaccurate with Tapiran cities being capable of tanking substantial damage and continue to stand. Magic also plays a role as the sturdy pillars and walls that make up their structures are often made out of magically enchanted materials. When it comes to the iconic structures, the angular nature of their buildings continues with many structures normally being some form of pyramid such as the palace of New Babylon being a large pyramid that technically operates as a miniature city within New Babylon.   Statues are often made out of solid steel that has been tinted gold, one such instance that testifies the strength of a Tapiran statue is when an Alpacan Skyship bombarded a fort, the fort not only withstood the assault but the statue was largely unaffected as well, with a few bombs hitting it. The Damage had been so bad that the stone foundation had cracked before the statue had. Religious iconography is all over the buildings with many Sun and moon markings coating the various assortment of buildings.   In fancier structures, it is not uncommon for highly reflective and pristine marble tiles to cover the flaw with golden trimmings. Many structures have some form of fire whether it is a fireplace or braziers that worships their gods. Shrines are also frequent with many streets being made out of cobblestone.

Art & Theatre

Tapira is quite an artful country, famous for its life-like solid steel sculptures and magical art, creating decorative and elaborate statues, some of which even float. They also popularised the Moving-Strokes technique which is a magical form of art where the Magi-Artist creates moving art pieces. An art they eventually exported to the rest of the world but many of the first pieces started with them. They often treat cities like canvases, pouring a lot of money into making cities worthy of seeing, believing in the concept that if something looks too appalling it is a mark against a Culture's prestige and thus reduces the amount of respect they are owed. If they can't be bothered to make their cities beautiful places, why should they be trusted with complex and high-maintenance trade deals and Policy agreements?   When it comes to theatre they are quite popular for their musicians who are a large assortment of instrumentalists, illusionists and Singers who operate in epic performances to tell grand stories. Tapiran shows are highly coveted for the lead Conductors orchestrate these once-in-a-lifetime shows aspiring to make every more fantastic pieces of art that leave viewers with an impression. Internally expression and culture is valued highly with each family working hard to make their own living spaces their own even if they are poor.   Writing is also quite advanced in Tapira as they were one of the first in Alicornia to develop their own language using the old World's Arabic as a basis. Their books are quite widespread with dedicated bookworms venturing to gain epic pieces such as the Odyssey of Merio a cultural classic and iconic book within Tapira.

Magic & Science

Magic is a pretty common thing within Tapira and many have pretty in-depth concepts of science with education not being shunned in the nation. Tapiran Mages are credited as some of the best mages in the world wielding beautiful ornate wands staves and spell tomes. Medical comprehension is pretty good within Tapira with many being well-washed, well-treated healthy individuals with good teeth. This is all thanks to the use of and understanding of magic which allows the average Tapiran to do a little bit more than they'd otherwise be capable of.

Technology

Magi-tech is fairly common within Tapira, for instance, a lot of Tapirans craft and utilise golems for activities such as mining or farming to help the average farm quadruple their output and keep the average tapiran far away from the terrible dangers of mining in a tunnel-deep underground. Various Regrowth spells are credited to Tapiran mages and indeed there are Golems that roam the land restoring its health and vigour from the devastation of Discord and bringing greenery back to various ecosystems.   Another field that Tapira excels at is Astronomy, having some of the most in-depth star charts and mathematical techniques. Such as they know that the circumference of Mars is 21,344 km even though that space technology is very common in this era. They make very good

Tapira appreciates Western Equestria's commerce however Sargon Masira doesn't trust Western Equestria. Believing it to be extremely imperialistic and very much like Alicornia of old. Sargon Masira has been pondering on severing ties with them due to the possibility of another foreign invasion.
