Orleania

Theme:

Origins

Once a Minor Region in Alicornia, after it's fall. Orleania fought war against it's self, raiders and Chaos demons to establish a nation state in 32 AD. Since then Orleania has been locked in a near constant state of war with Naqah due to former nation, Alicornia's enslavement of Zebras and Zorrilias. Rather spiteful of Alicornia they have spent the long years fighting histories greatest enemies and indeed took part in the invasion of Western Equestria and was subsequently placed under Western Equestria's sphere of influence and making Orleania a part of the Equestrian Empire and opened the way to Yorta's eventual take over of the country.   In essence, Orleania is cursed by the legacy of Alicornia and as a result, they simply can't move forwards socially or scientifically.

Government

The Government is a Relic in almost every sense, running a traditional constitutional monarchy with an established aristocracy and the presence of Great Guilds rather then companies. They still operate by a traditional Feudal system with very little in the way of upward mobility and has all the traits of a old timey medieval government.   Each city has a Lord who are represented in a Royal Council who are a part of the King's Court and has various traditional and conservative concepts.

State Religion

One of the biggest political developments in 'recent' history is when in 720 AD the Church of the Goddess de-tangled itself with politics and caused Orleania to lean more on its aristocracy than the Church for various duties. Now Orleania namely just worships the Goddess instead of depending on the clergy for guidance and orders.

Leadership

The very seat of power is the Golden Throne, which the King or Queen sits at. Currently, Louis Lémieux, the patriarch of House Lémieux is sitting at the throne and Lémieux is the oldest ruling House in Orleania's history. The house first attained power after House Montagu attempted resist the Western Equestrian dominion over the country and lost the civil war against the Underdog Lémieux.   Every successor is chosen by a line of secession with minor wars of secession and City Civil Wars causing disruptions in the leadership before the Status quo thanks to foreign influence and the need for unity against Naqah.

Growing Instability

The Status quo isn't enough for a growing number of people as Famine, shortages and general inefficiency and total disconnect between those in power and those who are not is leading to a rise in extremism across various factions, most notably the Orleanian Republicans who believe Orleania should be a Free Republic and should resist the Rising NEP in Pfredreich.   Coupled with Yorta's tight grip on politics, it is leading to a steadily growing number of Protests and riots since 4487 and it's possible that a great Orleanian revolution is on the cusp of sparking.

Economy

Due to the constant Warring against invaders and civil wars, Orleania is Economically stunted. Despite living in a rich Land, they lack the means to monopolize on their own resources and instead depend on the Yorta-owned mining guilds and farming guilds to extract the resources for them. It's a Feudal system which means a pretty middling GDP and a disappointingly slow growth rate.   With Yorta firmly in control of everything, the economy will never truly threaten Western Equestria and their sluggish growth very much guarantees this for the foreseeable future. The lower classes are often shafted when it comes to decisions and get very little in the ways of education and representation. Due to the ultimately traditional nature of the economy, its biggest export is its food.   Forced to export its food and culture in an attempt to keep the system going.

Tourism

Given its such undeveloped system, outside of Bougie city, big parties and beaches, Orleania doesn't have much of a tourist industry despite the shockingly beautiful city mainly due to the constant war and lack of economic sophistication to support such a developed tourist system.

Military

The Military is a fairly traditional Feudal levee army with Knights except with added magical units, industrial golems and a slow adaptation of guns and artillery. Orleania spends half of its funds on the military training up a special select few to defend the many and then martial gigantic armies of levees when the state is majorly threatened.   In terms of Doctrines, it's fairly standard medieval tactics with even the deployment of Line battles for rifle units and orderly formations for Industrial golems. To say Orleania has fallen behind is an understatement. This is mostly due to the fact that the Orleanian military rarely gets an opportunity to learn from experience before their life is at risk again.   Meaning that the Military is stuck in stagnation, even as the enemies around them get increasingly sophisticated, even the enemies within are advancing.

Culture

Orleania has a fair bit in common with France, Belgium and Luxembourg and the Netherlands with France being the core influence in Orleania. Largely ignorant of what France is, this is another result of Alicornian cultural conservation. Having developed their own culture and standards with a language that sounds close to standard French.

Fashion

Despite the backwards nature of Orleania their fashion and high society is very much celebrated as peak aristocratic culture and is emulated across the world, even if some emulators are very clumsy about it. They wear a lot of clothes reminiscent of Industrial Era France with general influences coming from Western Equestria, Pfredreich and Tolvana.   The general citizenry doesn't possess any 'modern' clothes and dresses far more historically than other nations with tunics, socks, and powdered wigs with the villagers stuck to very basic medieval fashion. It's an odd mix of 14th-18th century designs that culminate into Orleanian Fashion. Big bright colours are preferred with many of the rich wearing a lot of make-up and white powdered wigs.

Holidays / Traditions

They have hearths warming Eve and various religious holidays and harvest festivals. They also engage in tournaments and jousting competitions. Gladiatorial arenas and big expensive extravagant magical balls are also frequent, even in bad times which often infuriates the lower classes. For those travelling through the country, there is always at least something to do while you are there.

Architecture

Orleanian Architecture is all about complexity, they could build a simple house but isn't a Building an Investment, a statement into the future? Orleania certainly seems to think so. Their buildings are credited as 'storied' meaning that you can feel the stories portrayed in each room and expansion. In general, most buildings follow a vaguely French Gothic style with heavy rustic themes in the countrysides. Orleania is fond of masonry, often crafting entire cities out of the stuff rather than the famous wooden style the French were fond of.    This is because Orleania has endured many wars with Naqah and so they require structures easier to maintain and rebuild. Of course the complexity of design elongates the process but hey, Orleania is not known for surrendering, even when it comes to architecture.
