Islish Port District

The port district in Islis consists of 45 piers the extend nearly half a mile into the shallows of the Ijinn Sea on the eastern side of the city. This is the second most prolific port in the region rivaled only by the free city, Abul Urud. The Islish port vies for mercantile dominance of the Ijinn, welcoming ships from the south as well as from Xian Yin in the far east across the sea.

Defences

When the trade vessels dock, they are welcomed and protected by a formidable navy, paid for by the nobles in Islis, and maintained by the church. Some would say that it is an excess due to the absence of an enemy capable of naval combat, but it is an effective means of deterrence in a sea increasingly overrun by Nomads - pirates dealing in illegal commerce and bloodshed.

Infrastructure

Eastward past the Shamal Dune Wall for a mere quarter mile before the land turns to sea, bustling markets and docks thrive in the dune's shadow. Flanking each side of the eastern gate into the city are tall sandstone watchtowers topped with bluish limestone cupolas and manned by Templars. Southward along the shore, sandstone walls stand tall to mirror the dune wall that extends north. Various guild houses, typically funded by wealthy Islish nobles, stand on the shore flanked by piers where dockworkers handle goods from ships of all sizes.

Guilds and Factions

The most prominent house in the Islish Port is the Shining Coast Port Authority. The organization is known throughout Qir as being within the upper echelons of the trade houses, possessing immeasurable wealth and commanding vast power due to its influence on Muqad and the Templars.

Architecture

The piers themselves are constructed using water-resistant palm wood. During construction of the port, the wood was treated with alchemy to strengthen it and mitigate damage sustained from the salty water of the Ijinn. The structures directly on the shore, like the villas of the Shining Coast Port Authority, tend to be raised with and comprised of blocks of limestone so that the tides pass underneath them. The structures tend to be Qirish in architecture with domed roofs to counter the effects of storms that assault the shore as well as sandstorms from the west.

Geography

The port district of Islis covers huge distance from north to south along the shoreline, though this distance is technically considered to be the shallows due to being centered in the wide Shamal Bay.
