Northbridge
Northbridge is built in a natural dip within Millennium City and gets its name from the huge 8 lane overpass that runs over this 10 block radius area. It was originally built in the early 20th century to provide affordable housing for the dock workers in Bayside during the height of the shipping and ship-building era of the city's history. As dock work and the ship building industry declined in the 60s and 70s, the workers left Northbridge and moved into more affluent areas, with grants provided by the government. This left multi-storey brownstone buildings more or less empty. In order to deal with a population of poorer communities (often minorities), these buildings were sold off to private owners who were 'encouraged' to takle in these people. The owners no longer get grants from the government, so the buildingsd are now ill-managed and in a state of disrepair.
With Interstate Highway 1A now running over parts of the district, Northbridge is a somewhat gloomy, depressing place the residents just want to escape.
“A new club has opened in the district, which appears to be an attempt by the son of Silas Prescott to start a regentrification project in the area. Will other investors get on board with trying to revitalise this much neglect area of the city, home to many of the poorer communities? Only time will tell.” Lauren Lindermann, Reporter for the City Runner
Demographics
Northbridge is mainly populated by minority groups and those unfortunate enough to have nowhere else to go; whether due to poor education, laziness, having fallen in with a bad crowd or just sheer bad luck, those how reside in Northbridge look for any way to escape the gloom and the violence.
Architecture
The district is mainly residential. It consists of a large number of two to six story 'brownstones'. These buildings are generally in poor repair.
Geography
Northbridge is built in a natural dip, left by the tsunami of 1863. The people who live here are under no illusions that this could happen again. There are sea defences but whether these will hold, no-one knows.
