Katharine was the daugher of a health-and-fitness professor at North Town University, about to start her studies the following year. Attracted by her genetic pedigree and hoping to sire a strong heir, Balthazar Ironside, a 23-year-old mercenary who worked as security for the Humans, seduced the 15-year-old Katharine. Two months before her 16th birthday, Katharine fell pregnant with their baby, Britomart, who would be born the following year.

Katharine came down with the mysterious plague that was sweeping the Noble Court, and continued to get steadily worse over the following days. Katharine was seduced by her husband, Balthazar, and got pregnant with her first child, Britomart, while she was still underage. Menelaus, her youngest child, has been fairly vocal about his father's mistreatment of all the family, but seems particularly bitter about what Balthazar has done to Katharine.
More recently, after the Patchwork Empire's wasp attack on the sick nobles, Katharine disappeared through a mirror in her private dressing room. When she was brought back by Menelaus, with the help of Hugo Dargent's bracelet, she had her hands bound in Thievian black cuffs, with glowing blue runes, and her gemstone had been forcibly removed from her head.
