The Gully

A slum, hedging into a gang controlled region of nice houses and such. Named for obvious reasons - it’s a low area between the ridge where the Old City and the Heights stand, and the next ridge south of the Creek, where Peterborough and Southbridge are. This is the real slum, where the poorest people in the city live. This was true before the troubles, and is even more pronounced in the 1610s.  - where the poorest people live - often in shanties and shacks, sometimes holes in the ground. The areas closer to the city are in better shape, but still more wooden buildings than not, and these usually falling down. There are a few stone buildings - most of them controlled by guilds (thieves, and others), some by private owners, usually adventurers. The area between Canal street and the walls are more stone, but are very old and very bad - this is one of the most dangerous places in the city. It is utterly dominated by the gangsters - both the guilds and the little gangs that grow up here.   Beyond Canal street is a lot more open ground - much of it given to livestock and the like. Tanneries and pig farms are here, making this very unpleasant - breweries, you name it. By the time you reach the actual gully - the creek - you have a shantytown, with lots of demi-humans, lots of desperate poverty, and the odd strange stone keep, from which come strange noises in the night.   1610: this was leveled in the wars. All the wooden buildings and shanties were burned down - rebuilt and burned again. The people murdered - most of the refugees from the city were from here. Now it is a no man’s land of wandering monsters, gangs, etc., as dangerous as any dungeon. Many monsters here - orcs, goblins, gnolls and hobgoblins, even trolls, giants, gith, drow - everything.   A certain recovery in some areas - shantytown for half-orcs (and often orcs) that almost achieve something like civilization.

Demographics

Race/Demographics: mostly human, but with a strong contingent of other races, most of them involved in either crime or armory. Quite a few half-orcs, tending to live in bunches on the edge of the fens. After the wars, this is even more true - there are large concentrations of half-orcs here, and a fair number of actual orcs, as well as goblins, hobgoblins and the like. In the past, these were entirely underground, and usually looking for trouble - in the 1610s, while many are still here to make trouble, there are areas where they are settled in almost as regular citizens. All fo this unofficial, as some of these races are banned fromt he city - but it is there.   Alignment: the thieves guild’s power twists it. CN, LE tend to be the most common; the guild itself runs from N-CN (in the quarter) to more LE, NE in the gully, to LE, LN in the heights; the wall gangs are strongly CE.

Guilds and Factions

The thieve's guild was very strong here before the wars, and indeed started the Troubles in Waynesburg. They were utterly wrecked, anf the guild itself has almost no presence here at all anymore.

Geography

Low place between the ridges, though much of it is more undulating than is usually supposed.
