Xu Gong Character in Nimenra | World Anvil

Xu Gong

Gong Xu

I am Xu Gong from the Lands of the White Moon in the West! Chosen to be the expedition's leader to further the relations that shall carry us forward!
— Xu Gong
Few believed Fenrik Klovhernsman when he came back from his journey westwards and told the stories of other Humans far away to the west. People still found it hard to believe when they came to Nimenra themselves in large barge-looking ships and luxurious clothing. One of these Shuwei who came with that ship was Xu Gong, a statesman and diplomat accordingly. Xu Gong has shown himself very interested in the new world around him as he daily explores the Kingdom of Ravero's capital as much as he is allowed. He starts to be well-liked but is still suspicious in the eyes of many in the assembly due to his sudden popularity and closeness to the king. More so he seems interested in travelling beyond the kingdom that hosts him... and perhaps he sees his chances as The War for Marlun reignites...

Apperance

Xu Gong is most likley seen with his longsleeved shirt and non-sleeved jacket, all in mix of black and green. The light, fluffy and black pants windens over his legs only to show the conturs of a fit pair of legs when hard winds blow. His face is sharp, the chin ending gently with a short, wellkept goatee. He also has a small mustach, equaly wellkept like his goatee above his upper lip. Xu Gong always keeps himself clean and a bright smile to everyone he meets. Unlike other humans. however, he and his fellow Shuwei has smaller "eyes" where their upper eyelids inner corner is closer to the lower.

Physical Condition

Unlike many others of his kind, Xu Gong shows to be quite fit and active in terms of physics. He has shown to be quite agile and a good sprinter while also have a decent capability with weapons handed to him. He stands almost always alert but relaxed in a manner where he is in constant thought, as if planing the next move after the other.

History

Little is given from Xu Gong himself about his homelands and previous life.
Of what he has told, he became at twelve a pupil of a "great teacher" as he translates it. From this humble beginning, he would develop to become a "scholar"/"statesman" to the Red Dragon Emperor. He was among the best of the best, a bright-minded individual with many skills and eventually, he was trusted with meeting Fenrik Klovhernsman during his second visit to the Lands of the White Moon. Xu Gong was tasked to learn Lavi in order to travel to Nimenra and begin communication with the country that Klovhernsman came from. Xu Gong became the leader of the delegation in addition to Hou Shin, one of the other Shuwei statesmen.
After their arrival four months later Xu Gong has been attending King Wallis Lionhiron's court. Despite being observed as one of the chief translators and capable speakers of Lavi, Xu Gong also attracted attention due to his ability to mix up even the simplest conversations with his mixed understanding of the language. The most famous example is his arrival where he "welcomed" Ravero to their landing, much to his companion Hou Shin's dismay.

A foreginer in a new world

Xu Gong is one of the about 400 Shuwei that has arrived on Nimenra as a delegation to Ravero. They are humans all of them but their ways and obviously their appearance is different. This has created some challenges for the leader of the delegation but he has also overcome this challenge greater than many expected. He is trusted by King Wallis of Ravero to some extent and even has proved himself a capable advisor for many and not just the king.
There are those, however, who fear his influence. He is after all a foreigner but also from somewhere that is unknown for the majority of Nimenra. No one except perhaps his countrymen knows how his mind works, even if it seems that even they are unsure. These people have made efforts in trying to test Xu Gong's actual intent in Nimenra. As of yet, he seems genuine in his interests for the people of Nimenra.

Education

Xu Gong has shown considerable knowledge about many things. While keeping most of his homeland's history and society brief, he shows himself to be very capable. When King Wallis considered options during a case in court, Xu Gong offered insight into the matter from a foreigner's perspective.
The case was a matter of civil dispute involving a tax that a duke took from traders who came from Nilaminra and unfairly treated them compared to other traders from outside of Ravero. The traders had stopped all their trade with Ravero in response to this and demanded that the king would do something about the duke's injustice.
As the collective of traders presented their case, Xu Gong asked them what their profit margins were compared to if the tax were to be withdrawn. If it was to be higher than what they would earn back home, he suggested they turn back home. The traders knew that they would make a profit either way but over time much lower than if they continued regardless of the duke's tax.
The duke retorted that the trader's profits were high and they downgraded his merchant's goods. He was asked by Xu Gong what the tax was for since the duke showed he had no problems with similar goods from other countries. When the duke refused to give an answer, Xu Gong pointed out the unfavourable situation for the duke's merchants existed despite the trader's presence. Xu Gong came up with a proposal that the tax instead was to be lower but on all traders from outside of the province. The traders accepted this as the better alternative than to turn back home and the duke resigned in appealing to the king or the assembly as it all seemed the fairest result.
- As the people can see, you have little to gain with the traders outside your walls. Inside, they will profit and you will profit with or without taxes. So tell me... how come does you allow others to do trade the same but not them? — What? — Ehum, I asked you, why do you allow other foreign trader's trade goods to compete with your merchants?
— Xu Gong addressing the duke
Beyond this show, he has talked about philosophical matters with the court and the council numerous times. His insight has intrigued many, even amongst his own retinue of scholars and statesmen due to what they say "his very different background" which Xu Gong is quick to dismiss.
Xu Gong is a very capable linguist according to the Shuwei that arrived with him. He has shown to have a strong understanding of the language and talked in his own and "others" as well to show his ability. He has also even started to speak Renvaren. However, he also has shown an odd ability to create complex and odd speech problems, understanding words incorrectly and more often creating long, complex sentences in rapid speech.

Magical Ability

Magic from where the Shuwei comes from seems to not be as common as for the Nimenrans. Xu Gong has explained how magic is used but only limited. Magic is rarer, harder to understand and is almost only ever practised through a sort of enchantment magic, a lost magic art for the Nimenrans. Xu Gong is one of the people in the delegation capable of using magic and practising this special art.
I am sure that Nimenra has much to show me, to show all! As one of the greatest minds from the Lands of the White Moon, I shall bring about a new era for us all!
— Xu Gong
