Textile Arts

The conversion of animal fibers, such as that of the shaggy Basket Horns, into yarn, and that yarn into fabric, is almost as old as Stenza civilization. The process is responsible for such products as Insulating Mesh and almost all other articles of clothing (excepting leather items such as the Takhasar). While the insulating mesh can now be crafted by machines, most other textiles are manufactured by hand. This is usually a pastime and an excuse to tell stories to one another, as well as a form of maintaining the cultural differences between clans and regions (see Weaves by Region).

History

Stenza weaving is thought to be as old as the first settlement some twenty-five thousand years before the Unification of Clans, or possibly slightly older, although its exact origins are unknown. The ruins of early settlements are full of Spindles, Looms and other related implements, as well as scraps of cloth and the remains of long bobbins, some with bits of thread still attached, unwoven. Analysis of the cloth and the thread indicate that some samples originate from the same collection of spun thread or yarn, or have connected some of the thread to cloth found on the deceased.   From the vague starting point alluded to by the collection of archaeological evidence, textile manufacturing has been known in every Stenza clan ever since. Some aspects of it have evolved with the times, such as the process by which Insulating Mesh can be synthesized and specially fitted to a given individual. Other aspects have retained a more traditional quality, almost completely in response to the Unification of Clans. Individual clans felt, and still feel, the urge to hang on to their history out of fear of getting totally subsumed into a unified identity (or as some have said, "becoming an extension of Strares droga").   However, as with all arts, inspiration can strike at any time. Experiments with weaves in particular have led to stylistic drift in the garments of some clans, such that people can tell a distinct difference between garments manufactured ten years apart around the time of the shift. Furthermore, the venture south has allowed certain dyes, particularly ʂef̂ǒl and its striking yellow color, to be incorporated into certain garments as distinguishing marks for Medical Doctors and Ship's Technicians, as well as others who work in dangerous situations.

Components and tools

The two primary tools used to manufacture textiles are the Spindle and the Loom respectively. Optional tools include Dyes and Bone Decoration, although these are not considered necessary for anyone.

:D So glad you enjoyed!   Fabric is such a big part of culture and we take it for granted.

Where would they be without clothes? (Srsly more sci fi worlds need to address this bc like, best I can assume for some of them is sweatshops exist still, or the clothes are made by like a replicator or something.)
