Wildeburn

The Unfinished Castle

Stub

On the edge of the Great Forest, near the East Coastline lays a lake of Quiet Pool in middle of a forest meadow. New to the lake stand a hill and on top of that hill a strange form of a forgotten castle.

Know to locals by the name of Wildeburn, the castle is an unfinished and abandoned passion project of a lesser Freynian nobility, but the site has ended up simply rotting on its place. The spot is rumored to be haunted and be full of hidden treasures.

The ruins are regularly taken by bandit groups and other individuals looking for a hiding place, making it almost like a passing right to local mercenaries to periodically wipe the criminals out of its empty halls.

Design

Wildeburn is relatively small as a castle, taking an area of 45 x 42 meters (1890 m2). The tallest point on the main tower is about 80 meters high, though the rounded roof starts in approximately 64 meters.

Architecture

What one can tell from the remains of the castle, Wildeburn was an ambitious project and meant to have a dramatic, extravagant style with round archways and ornate decor. It was to have a courtyard with a garden, and a large main tower with a rounded roof.

History

The exact origin of Wildeburn is surrounded in mystery. Because of the nature of the construction and actions of its original commissioner, very little is known about why the castle came to be. Or why it was abandoned in the middle of development.

As far as it is documented, Wildeburn was commissioned by a lesser noble family from the Kingdom of Freynia who lived in the Island at the time. The first documents about the construction come from 3512, on which point the construction process was already started. The exact dates have been lost, but thanks to Stone Hall Archives some of the papers about purchases of stone and contracting builders still exist today.

Construction was plagued with problems, one of the biggest, which was the commissioner's decision to build the castle to a forest. Records show that the commissioner possibly had in mind some kind of trade benefit and that they were hoping to gather a village around the castle. This, however, was no easy task to complete.

The building was abandoned after about 40 years of construction, while nearly two-thirds finished. Reasons for this have been left for speculation. Some suggested that the site is haunted, or the fey of the forest started to attack the builders. Others have suggested some financial issues might have struck the family, causing them to abandon the project. Others believe this might have been caused by Silver Shore Island moving over to rule of Empire of Islenor. But the records are inconclusive.
