Pythia

Pythia is a warm and hilly region bordering Lirhan and the Bay of Souls. Pythia is the most geographically diverse of the Satrapies, dividing itself into five provinces each ruled by a regional Governor. While the north western region of Pythia is dominated by bogs and forest, the southern peninsula has a rich farm land, and the eastern offers mineral wealth and access to the bay.   Pythia has strong ties to the Magia, providing the island with food and supplies, and has been the birthplace of the most Arcanes and Divines of any of the Satrapies.

Demography and Population

Pythia has a diverse population, with customs and language varying in each of the Provences. Of note is a significant population of Firbolgs, who tend to congregate in small communities, and while accepting of outsiders seem to have little interest in traveling far from their places of birth.   Affluent in comparison to other Satrapies, Pythia has had hundreds of years of political influence, grants and kick-backs. Pythia also has a large number of Conclave Trained magic users, who typically enjoy extreme respect. Having a child with magical talent is enough to raise a family out of poverty, resulting in many superstitions that supposedly encourage magical talents to develop.   Funeral rites in Pythia involve laying out the dead for ten days, with friends and family often traveling large distances to pay respect to the dead before they are interned in a House of the Dead.

Religion

Like all in the nations of the Magus Conclave Lirhans worship practice Ioism, the worship of Asgorath, The World Shaper.   The most common religion in Pythia prior to the Conclave was worship of The Raven Queen. Many of the temples that once where dedicated to her worship were re-purposed into houses of the dead, these, along with the Pools of Memory in Torrisbown retain cultural significance, even if their importance as places of worship has faded.

Foreign Relations

Pythia has strong ties to the Magia, to the point that often the distinction between Magia politics and Pythian politics is often blurred. It also has a close relationship with Elyne, with the two Satrapies working closely together to ensure that the defenses at The Judge and Anvil are maintained.

Education

Pythia's formal education system is limited. Families with wealth commonly employ tutors, while those without learn from family members, community elders or through apprenticeships. Those wishing to dedicate themselves to Asgorath often do so at a young age and receive religious education, and the Houses of the Dead do take on apprentice scribes.   Pythian mages visit villages regularly to identify talented students who may be candidates for magical education. These children receive tutors, payed for by the Satrapy, along with a stipend for their family. From age eleven these children attend boarding schools in their regional capital before starting their magical education at the Magia at age fourteen.
