Indus Workers League

The Indus Worker's League is a syndicalist republic in a classless society. The Workers League is effectively a trade union-turned-government, founded prior to the founding of the People's Republic of Lordania. It is tied heavily to the Indus Shipyards. It is meritocratic, and democratic. Most outside the Worker's League consider Indus to be an inefficient system of government, with a low quality of life. However, it ranks highly in terms of freedom and liberty, with a strong economy built around its shipyards. It is currently led by Chairwoman Elizabeth Jones.

Structure

The Indus Workers League is a central congressional system headed by a Chairperson. The workers have the rights to elect a commission and form unions that represent their interests, taking the role of political parties in the system. The Congress is exclusively dedicated to both the protection of its people, and the responsibilities of industries, having fully nationalised all services.    The Chairperson is elected upon experience, character, and merit by the council which is an elected position made up of workers and residents. This system works due to its highly centralised industrial unions, low population, and isolation. It is protected from external threats by the Confederate Systems of Lordania.

History

Indus was first settled in 2230 after the expansion of the First Lordanian Republic necessitated the creation of a centralised shipbuilding industry. The Indus colony was ran directly by the Lordanian State and retained little say in the political systems, with large parts of the shipyards being contracted to various corporations, many owned by close friends of the government, and many more completely incapable of running them.   2265 saw widespread civil unrest break out against the corporate holders that had been funnelling funds away from the lives of its workers. Indus had not been considered developed enough to warrant it's own government, and due to unrest, the people of Indus were effectively unable to vote in any major election. Taking advantage of this, the Lordanian Unity party, led by Leonard Percy, advocated a hard nationalisation of all Indus, flew in election ballots and presented them on the floor of the Lordanian Senate. Unsurprisingly, the majority of votes were for the Unitarian Party.   Under the Unitarians, various Indusian factions were provided with arms and support, culminating in an violent takeover of corporate assets. With support of the PRL, the means of production were placed in the hands of the workers. As part of their government restructuring, the newly formed People's Republic of Lordania recognised Indus as a rightful member, and granted loyal forces the rights to form their own colonial government. Around this time, the Shipyards were infiltrated by Louis Poincaré and Mei Zhuang, who hijacked the CV Respite while it was under construction here.   Like most planets in the Cluster, the PRL created a puppet state, named the People's Republic of Indus, which adhered to pro-worker principles. For the first few years, the shipyards were able to elect their own leaders and lived in peace with their Lordanian overlords. However in 2272, the elected Governor was replaced by military leadership following a disagreement over worker's rights. Protest naturally ensued, leading to several years of martial law in which civil rights were heavily curtailed.   Numerous acts of sabotage against the shipyards continued to increase Lordanian defence of the system, indirectly contributing to a large growth in Indusian infrastructure. As a border system, the shipyards were target for The Brotherhood destroyers. Actions were taken to prevent civilian casualties, including sending advance warnings to loyal parties within the facilities, as well as smuggled arms. As a result, Indus swiftly came to ally with the Brotherhood. In 2279, following the death of the Consul and the large scale collapse of the People's Republic, Indus workers staged a large uprising alongside Brotherhood forces. Much of the shipyard was rendered unusable, and the last PRL forces surrendered in 2280.   Under Brotherhood control, action was taken to ensure a proper transition to democracy, placing great power in the Workers League, which had remained active throughout the Lordanian occupation. Joining the Brotherhood's growing political alliance, the Democratic League in 2283, Indus became a founding member of the Confederate Systems of Lordania upon its creation in 2287. Not only that, but a widescale effort to rebuild the shipyards was undertaken by all member planets, with the fires of industry once again burning bright in the forges.   Indus has become a valuable asset for the Confederation, one that the Republic will be intent on retaking. The people of Indus have only one thing to say to invaders, "Try us."
