Welcome to the Judge of Mystics Saga

Mythpunk Meets Godpunk with a Punch to the Throat

"There was no manual for being the Judge." Caleb shook his head, doused his mouth with more whiskey. "I've got Realms stacked upon Realms, stacked upon the cosmos and somehow I'm the one who looks at situations with fairness. Keep doing what I think is best, and inevitably one or more groups are pissed off to high heavens, which is in itself a problem, since Hera's only recently back on Olympus' throne. Did you know the Olympians are probably listening to this conversation right now?"

"If they are, I could really use a pizza, no cheese, extra basil, prosciutto and some... truffle. Yeah. Fire oven, not the hot electric things. Oh, and some wine. Whiskey is the bomb, but a good few bottles of red would set the evening off. Send it via Finn's. With one of those little chocolate cheesecakes on the side. You want anything? If... if they're listening, that means they're available, right? Mercury would probably do the delivery for a lark. Oh, and bubbles. We could use a bottle of bubbles."

Caleb blinked with a slow shake of his head, and a dawning smile. "Yeah, beef dip for me. Extra au jus, extra mushrooms. Thicker than Tuija's wrist. The wine sounds... sounds good."

If you love books that blend drama and humour seamlessly, Char & Ash is an absolute must-read.

With the appearance of Zeus in a diaper and Icarus squirming at the sight of the ocean, the mood of this book is balanced perfectly between the beautiful worldbuilding and the grim story of Judge Caleb Mauthisen within it.

Main Characters

To the Top
The Judge of Mystics. Child of Wrath.

Laid on the altar of the Axis Mundi as a newborn, Caleb became the Peace Child, who stopped centuries of war. As he grew, he became Peacekeep and Judge. Part of no Realm but beholden to them all.

The Dragon's Daughter.

Adopted by Veles as an infant, Tuija was a human raised in the presence of the divine. She became a fierce warrior and proved herself in battle. By the end of the Mystic War, she was the last warrior cursed with the Rastenivitsya Fae curse slowly turning her body into a living plant. In love with Caleb Mauthisen.

Lethal Keeper of the Book of Knowledge.

"When I found the book left stagnant in the old man's basement, I had no idea of the Mystic Realms or the Truce. I knew nothing but the fairy stories of youth. There was no God, for we killed him, moved past the societal requirement for a guiding hand. There were no gods. I would not believe in one... Imagine then, finding the Book of Knowledge. The repository of all wisdom, all information. And it was full of deities clinging for scraps. Fetid relics of collective weakness."

Resurrected Genius Child of Daedalus.

From their death falling into the Aegean to millennia in the Underworld, Icarus inherited their father Daedalus' genius. The most protected little sibling in the Cosmos.

Resurrected Meathead Child of Daedalus.

From their death falling into the Aegean to millennia in the Underworld, Lou protected his genius sibling. He joined Ares' Spartan Morae as a soldier.

War. God of Masculinity. God-Exile.

The self-exiled Olympian of War & adopted Aesir, Ares has been in Midgard longer than most. Many view him as the closest to Midgard’s King of the Gods.

Char & Ash
The Book of Knowledge is gone. Someone is trying to kill gods.

When Caleb is called to the charred remains of a scorched Sacred Grove outside Dover, rumours reignite tensions as Ares warns of war’s whisper. High Queen Selyka is hiding something in the roots and petals of her Fae Courts, and it smells of char and ash.

Caught between the Mystic Truce, Ares’ demands for answers and concern for his Fae-cursed lover Tuija’s safety, Caleb descends into a roiling adventure to find the perpetrators and staunch the flow before the Mystic Realms lose faith in him and in peace. Little does he know the perpetrator Stana stole something far more precious than belief in gods and heroes.

Son of Abel

The entire cosmos hiccups around Finnegan the Fae. Caleb Mauthisen desperately clings to the journals of a 7th Century Catholic Cardinal, obsessed with a magical tattoo that threatens to crumble the Mystic Realms to wrath and war.

A place they know and fear too well.

Spiralling with only his scheming ex Delilah to 'help', Caleb searches for the elusive way out of the Truce, as he descends through the essence of grief into layers of hell on earth.

Finnegan breaks his exile to find Caleb's absentee father Raynar, before his absence strips the Realms of their Judge and protector.

Macabre and Monstrous
Whiskey and Sinners Blood & The Lamia.

When Colm O'Riordan comes home with a bottle of whiskey for his beloved wife, Carolee is immediately suspicious. What's his husband done now, that she'd have to fix? It was bad enough moving to Bray from a County a little too close to North. With their son Liam's fate on the line and a Fae High Queen at her ankles, Carolee does what any mother would... really... any mother... wouldn't they?

Caught by a monster's claws in Vancouver, Caleb Mauthisen crawls toward help. A Lamia was a horrible thing, a cursed woman whose body transformed into a half-serpent monster with insatiable hunger. Who cursed this woman? Why? When Caleb defeats the Lamia in the middle of Granville and W.12th, how does he face his daughters, once he gets back home?

Reconnecting Family

The main theme of the Judge of Mystics Saga is reconnection. A family broken and divided inspected, repaired where repairs are possible, forgiven where the cost is high. It is Caleb Mauthisen's story, a man raised separate from his family, kept apart. His search to connect, repair and forgive is the backbone of this body of works.

Family, born into and found, builds the emotion and spirit of the Saga. It is possible, regardless of past pain, to heal and hopefully overcome.

Unity Amongst Differences

Midgard is the central of the Realms, a place where intersection and intermingling is possible. Yet, when multiple cultures, creeds, faiths and creatures come together, perfection is impossible. As Judge, it is Caleb's responsibility to find peace amongst differing views.

My intention with the Judge of Mystics Saga is to highlight how unity toward a common goal is possible, common universal truths are both necessary and worth fighting for. We can all find our way past the conflicts of the past, into a complex but beautiful future.

The rich and incredibly diverse folklore and mythology from across the planet is my playground. As a post-secondary educated mythologist, who focused intensely throughout my academic career on myth, ancient literature and comparative religious studies, I delve as deep as possible into the arcane and ancient. This well of knowledge is tempered by the Absurdists like Camus, surrealists and the magic realists like Haruki Murakami, Clarice Lispector and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

And 300... I... I freaking loved Zach Snyder's take on 300... oh and Ridley Scott's Gladiator those two're less academic and more esthetic...
