Mammals

The mammals of the Helerin Archipelago are as varied as the landscapes they inhabit, from the smallest rodents to the largest, most fearsome megafauna. These creatures have adapted to survive in diverse environments across Helerin, ranging from dense forests and wide plains to arid deserts and cold mountains. Mammals play crucial roles in the archipelago’s ecosystems as predators, prey, and foragers, maintaining the balance of nature while also impacting the lives of the people.   Many mammals have become iconic symbols in the culture and folklore of Helerin, revered for their strength, cunning, or endurance. Some, like the massive Morru or the deadly Linsarr, are symbols of survival and power in the wild, while smaller creatures like the squirrel and mouse contribute to the day-to-day fabric of the land’s biodiversity.  

Terrestrial Mammals

The land mammals of Helerin include both small creatures like hares and squirrels and massive megafauna like the Rhakkor and Yrin. These creatures have adapted to thrive in forests, plains, mountains, and deserts, each filling a unique role in the ecosystems of the archipelago.   Amsulla A grazing herbivore of the grassy plains.  

  Basorra A giant, solitary ape that inhabits the forests and canyons of western Remon. Fiercely territorial and elusive, the Basorra is a formidable creature, known for its strength and intelligence.  

  Bear Large and powerful, bears are feared and respected throughout Helerin. Found in forests and mountains, they are known for their golden or reddish-brown fur and unpredictable aggression when threatened.  

  Beaver These industrious creatures are only found in northern Remon and Forbin, where they build dams that regulate river and lake water flow, creating wetlands that benefit many other species.  

  Boar Wild boars roam the forests of Helerin, foraging for roots and tubers. They are aggressive and difficult to hunt, posing a challenge for even the most skilled hunters.  

  Deer Graceful and swift, deer are common in Helerin’s forests. Their agility helps them evade predators, and they serve as vital prey for wolves, wildcats, and other large hunters.  

  Durnhorn A large, shaggy herbivore of the highlands and cold plains, the Durnhorn is prized for its thick fur and meat. Nomadic tribes depend on this hardy creature for survival in the wild.  

  Dutha A massive, mole-like predator that tunnels beneath the deserts and plains of Teros and Mar Mabon. Duthas use their powerful claws to dig and capture prey, making them a dangerous underground presence.  

  Fox Clever and resourceful, foxes in Helerin vary by climate, with golden fur in warmer regions and dark brown in cooler forests. They are skilled hunters and figure prominently in folklore.  

  Hare Hares are common across the plains and meadows, known for their speed and agility. They are prey to many of Helerin’s predators and symbolize survival and adaptability.  

  Hrynn Wild mountain sheep found in the rugged regions of the archipelago. Their thick wool and meat are highly valued by hunters, and some are domesticated by rural communities.  

  Jackal Found in the arid regions of Teros and Mar Miskun, jackals are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, often forming small packs to take down larger prey.  

  Linsarr A fearsome wolf-like predator that prowls the forests and mountains of Teros Major and Remon. Known for its speed, agility, and terrifying hunts, the Linsarr is a dangerous creature rarely encountered by people.  

  Marmot Burrowing creatures that live in colonies in the high-altitude regions of Helerin. Marmots are a common sight in remote mountain ranges, contributing to the ecosystem as prey for larger predators.  

  Mettin Massive, goat-like creatures that roam the high mountains of Mar Mabon and Remon. Yrin are revered for their strength and their majestic spiraled horns, which are used for defense and dominance.  

Yrin

  Monkey Mischievous and aggressive, monkeys inhabit the rocky highlands of Mar Mabon. Though not widespread, they are well-known for their antics and are feared in the regions they inhabit.  

  Morru A colossal herbivore native to the plains and highlands of Mar Mabon and Teros Major. Known for their size and peaceful nature, Morru are symbols of endurance in Helerin’s wilderness.  

  Mouse Mice are found in every region of Helerin. Though often considered pests in human settlements, they are an important food source for many predators in the archipelago.  

  Narshax Enormous rodents that swarm in large numbers, Narshax are a threat to farmland and settlements, devouring crops and livestock. They are particularly troublesome in Teros and Remon.  

  Rat Common in towns and cities, rats are scavengers that thrive alongside people. They are disliked for spreading disease, but their resilience and adaptability make them survivors.  

  Redsnout A large, aggressive boar-like creature that roams the hills and plains of Mar Miskun. Feared for their strength and destructive habits, Redsnouts pose a threat to travelers and settlements.  

  Rhakkor A towering predator that roams the wild plains and deserts of Helerin. With its striking red-brown fur and relentless hunting instincts, the Rhakkor is one of the most dangerous creatures in the archipelago.  

  Squirrel Golden-furred and agile, squirrels are a common sight in the forests. Known for their long, white-tipped tails, they are active foragers and important to the ecosystem’s balance.  

  Vorind A swift and cunning predator, the Vorind is an elusive carnivore found in forests and hills. It preys on smaller animals, using stealth and agility to dominate its hunting grounds.

  Wildcat Elusive and solitary, wildcats are skilled hunters found in the forests and mountains of Helerin. They prey on smaller mammals and are feared for their speed and sharp claws.  

  Wolf Wolves hunt in packs across the forests and mountains of Helerin. Their haunting howls echo through the wilderness, and they play a vital role in maintaining the balance of predator and prey.  

 

Aquatic Mammals

While the land mammals of Helerin are varied, the archipelago is also home to several aquatic mammals that thrive in its seas and along its coastlines. These creatures are integral to the ecosystems of Helerin's waters, from the playful dolphin to the enormous whale.  

Dolphin

Intelligent and social, dolphins are a common sight in the seas surrounding Helerin. Known for their playful nature, they are often regarded as protectors of sailors and are seen as a symbol of good luck.  

 

Otter

Only found around the shores of Remon and the Seynan Islands, otters are playful and skilled swimmers. They are often seen hunting fish in the shallow coastal waters and are respected for their ability to thrive in the harsh marine environment.  

 

Seal

Playful marine mammals, often seen basking on coastal rocks or diving for fish.  

 

Whale

Large and majestic, whales are a rare sight in the deep oceans around Helerin. These gentle giants are symbols of endurance and are often associated with ancient myths and seafaring cultures.  

 

Flying Mammals

Moggrin

Winged, troll-like creatures that hunt in packs across the mountain ranges of Mar Mabon and Teros Major. Known for their eerie cries and aggressive pack-hunting tactics.
