Marmot

Marmots are small, burrowing rodents native to the mountainous and hilly regions of Helerin. Known for their sharp whistles and communal burrows, marmots play a vital role in the ecosystems they inhabit, acting as both prey for larger predators and foragers for plant material. They are commonly found in elevated terrains with good access to vegetation and open spaces for burrowing.

Physical Appearance

Marmots in Helerin typically have stout bodies covered in thick, brownish-gray fur, which helps them withstand cooler climates in higher altitudes. They have short, powerful legs with sharp claws designed for digging. Their heads are broad, with small, round ears and dark, beady eyes, while their bushy tails are around 5-7 inches in length. An adult marmot can grow up to 20 inches in length and weigh between 8 and 15 pounds, depending on the season and location.

Habitat

Marmots favor open, grassy areas on hills and mountains, where they can create complex burrow systems for shelter and hibernation. They prefer elevations with mild to cold climates, often near rocky outcrops or cliffs that provide vantage points for observing predators. In Helerin, marmots can be found in the upland regions of Remon (such as the Krund Hills and Grimcrags), the Bostin Hills of Forbin, and the Shidar Highlands and Burning Peaks of Mar Mabon.

Behaviour

Marmots are social animals, living in small colonies and sharing burrows. They are known for their sharp, piercing whistles, which they use to alert the colony of approaching predators. During summer, marmots spend most of their time foraging for grasses, herbs, and roots to fatten up for winter hibernation, which can last up to six months. They are diurnal, spending their daylight hours above ground and retreating to their burrows at night. Marmots are territorial and will defend their burrows from other colonies.

Geographic Distribution

Marmots are commonly found in the northern and western parts of the archipelago. In Remon, they inhabit the Krund Hills, Grimcrags, and the edges of the Silverwood. In Forbin, they can be found in the Bostin Hills and Missen Hills, preferring the rugged, rocky areas. In Mar Mabon, marmots are primarily located in the Shidar Highlands and lower slopes of the Burning Peaks, though they tend to avoid the more desolate or volcanic areas. They are not present in the warmer, lowland regions or the desert areas of Mar Miskun or Teros.

Interaction with People

Marmots are occasionally hunted for their fur and meat, though they are not a primary food source for the people of Helerin. Some mountain-dwelling communities value their thick fur for use in clothing and blankets. Marmots are also regarded as symbols of alertness and preparedness in certain cultures, particularly in the northern realms of Forbin and Remon, where their ability to hibernate through harsh winters is admired. While they pose no threat to humans, they are sometimes seen as pests when their burrowing disrupts farmland or grazing areas for livestock.
