Otter

Otters are agile and intelligent marine mammals found along the coasts of the Seynan Islands and Remon. Adapted to a life spent primarily in the sea, otters are known for their playful behavior and remarkable dexterity, particularly when hunting for food in the water. Their ability to navigate the shorelines with ease makes them a common sight in coastal regions, where they dive for fish and shellfish.

Physical Appearance

Otters have sleek, streamlined bodies covered in dense, waterproof fur that helps insulate them in the cool waters of the archipelago. They have webbed feet, which make them excellent swimmers, and their long, muscular tails assist with navigation. Adult otters can grow up to 4 feet in length, including the tail, with males typically being slightly larger than females. Their fur is brown to dark brown, and it remains glossy and smooth even after extended periods in the water.

Habitat

Otters are found along rocky shorelines, in sheltered bays, and among kelp forests. They rely on the rich coastal waters to provide them with a steady supply of food, particularly fish, crabs, and other marine creatures. Otters create dens along the shore, often in crevices between rocks or in burrows dug into sandy shores. Their habitat is closely tied to areas where food is abundant and the waters are calm enough for easy hunting.

Behaviour

Otters are highly social animals, often seen resting in groups along the shore or playing together in the water. They are diurnal, hunting during the day and returning to the shore to rest at night. Their playful antics, such as somersaulting in the water and sliding down muddy slopes, are not only for enjoyment but also serve as exercises to hone their hunting skills. Otters feed mainly on fish and crustaceans, using their sharp teeth to catch and break open shells. They are also known for using stones to crack open shellfish, showing remarkable problem-solving skills.

Distribution

Otters are restricted to the coastal regions of the Seynan Islands and Remon. They are especially common in the sheltered bays and inlets where food is abundant and the waters remain calm. These regions provide otters with the ideal environment for hunting and raising their young.

Interaction with People

Otters are often viewed with fondness by the coastal communities of the Seynan Islands and Remon. Their playful nature and curious behavior make them a common sight along the shores, where they are sometimes tolerated for their role in keeping fish populations in balance. However, some fishermen view them as competition for valuable fish stocks, leading to occasional conflicts. Despite this, otters are generally respected and left undisturbed, and in some regions, they are considered symbols of resourcefulness and adaptability.
