Mettin are massive goat-like creatures native to the high mountains and rocky hills of Helerin. Revered for their strength and resilience, these colossal herbivores play an important role in the ecosystems of the more remote and rugged regions of the archipelago. They are a common sight in the untamed highlands, where their imposing size and majestic horns set them apart from other mountain-dwelling creatures.
Physical Apperance
Standing over 10 feet tall at the shoulder, Mettin have thick, muscular bodies covered in coarse, shaggy fur that protects them from the harsh climates of the mountains. Their most distinctive feature is their enormous, spiraled horns, which can grow up to 15 feet in length. These horns are not only used for defense against predators but also in battles for dominance within the herd. Their fur varies from dark grey to light brown, providing camouflage in rocky environments.
Habitat
Mettin are found in the high mountains and rocky hills of northern Mar Mabon and the Stonelands of Remon. These rugged environments offer the steep terrain they are well-suited for, with their powerful legs and hooves allowing them to scale treacherous cliffs and navigate narrow ledges with ease. They thrive in cold, windswept areas where grasses, shrubs, and lichens grow in sparse but sustaining patches.
Behaviour
Mettin are herbivores, grazing on tough mountain vegetation that other creatures cannot digest. Despite their massive size, they are surprisingly agile climbers, capable of traversing the most challenging terrain. Mettin are generally peaceful, living in small herds that offer protection and social structure. However, when threatened, they can become highly aggressive, using their massive horns to defend themselves and their herd from predators or intruders. During the breeding season, males engage in fierce battles for dominance, clashing their horns in loud, resounding collisions that echo across the mountains.
Geographic Distribution
Mettin are primarily found in the northern regions of Mar Mabon and the Stonelands of Remon, where the terrain is particularly steep and challenging. These remote areas provide the isolation they need to thrive, and their herds tend to stay away from populated regions, favoring the high elevations where they can live undisturbed.
Interaction with People
Mettin are generally avoided by people due to their size and potential for aggression. However, their wool is highly prized for making warm, durable clothing, particularly in regions where the cold mountain winds make such garments essential. Their horns are also valued, often used to craft tools, weapons, or ceremonial objects. While some hunters may seek to harvest these resources, approaching a herd of Mettin is a dangerous endeavor, and the creatures are generally respected from afar.
