Myrkan
Demographics
The city is a rich mix of almost every race on Halodar due to its status as a colonization hub for the area. That said, the population is definitely skewed towards humans, dwarves, and halflings though every race has some degree of representation.
Government
Typical of a feudal kingdom, Myrkan is owned by the local noble who was granted the territory by the King. At the top, is Duke Godefroy of House Dufresne. Below him are various advisors and functionaries he has appointed to oversee various aspects of the administration of his territories. There is also a King's Court of Common Pleas large enough to hear both initial cases and appeals from more rural courts.
Defences
There is a small stone fortress that served as the original outpost before Myrkan became the city it is today. Additionally, the principal portion of the town is surrounded by a high, wooden wall with several towers built along it. The wall is thicker and more substantial than a palisade and allows guard patrols along its top.
Industry & Trade
Currently the majority of wealth in Myrkan is generated through trade and construction-related industry. It serves as the main focal point for various trading companies that are attempting to re-settle the frontier region of Aebeald's Gap. It also serves as the breadbasket for the entire region and has many agriculture related industries that deal in both raw agricultural goods such as fruits, vegetables, and other crops as well as more advanced industries to exploit animal products such as tanneries, dairies, and slaughterhouses.
Infrastructure
There are several government buildings located a courthouse, ministry of trade, and bank. There are also rustic, but expansive, docks that are almost constantly active bringing supplies and people from other areas of Aelliver. Most of the non-governmental buildings are well-constructed with timber but the rapid expansion of the settlement led to a maze of haphazard roads and alleyways that is difficult for non-natives to follow.
History
Myrkan was founded shortly after the end of the Great Northern War but at the time of its founding it was a hastily constructed wooden fortress meant to serve as a base for the division of the Faladrion army left in the area to restore and maintain peace following the end of the major conflicts in the war. Following the peacekeeping operation, the wooden fortress was torn down and rebuilt as a more permanent stone fortification and shortly thereafter the current Duke, Godefroy Dufresne, was installed into his new lands.
After the arrival of the new Duke, construction sped up considerably with the addition of more permanent stone buildings intended to house various governmental functions as well as a new home for the Duke himself outside of the fortress which he felt was too cramped and military to serve as a permanent home. The Duke also ordered the construction of expansive docks to accomodate incoming settlers and trade goods to help support the resettlement that the King wished to see in the area.
As the resettlement efforts progressed, the population of Myrkan exploded and the construction entered into a frenzy resulting in the confusing and expansive settlement that exists today. While construction and settlement has slowed somewhat over the past decade, Myrkan remains a fast-growing central hub for a fast-growing region.
Natural Resources
Myrkan is surrounded by generally fertile farmland that is increasingly exploited to provide food for the surrounding region. Myrkan also supports remote logging camps to take advantage of the substantial timber available in the nearby Frostwood Forest.
