Ishkibal

The Divine Ishkibal Arzad (a.k.a. The God of the Blackest Night)

When both moons are new and the night sky is empty, Ishkibal is given regency over the world.    Ishkibal uses his paladins and powers of divine inspiration to spread the many sects of his religious pet project: Ishkibism. He also supports warriors he considers moral and those seeking power for good reasons.

Divine Domains

Ishkibal is generally known as the God of War, Mercy, Strategy, Peace, Purification, Judgment, and Redemption. He is associated with Starmetal and blood.

Holy Books & Codes

Ishkibites call the holy texts of Ishkibal the Hetvar (meaning both "blade of truth" and "scrolls of truth" in Old Desmian). The text written by Ishkibal himself while he was mortal are called the Words Ascendant; the text written by Ishkibal post-divinity are the Words Heavenly; the text written by religious elders with Ishkibal's inspiration are the Words Serene.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

  • A white or red sword over a black moon
  • Purple flame
  • Two black moons
  • A diamond that is half black and half red

Tenets of Faith

  • Good and evil are in eternal struggle, and every person must actively choose good over evil
  • The struggle never ends, and moral goodness requires constant effort
  • Every person has the potential for good or evil; the greatest weapon in the arsenal of good is redemption
  • It is the responsibility of those who have to protect those who have not
  • We must examine ourselves constantly, to always strive to be better
  • Bravery, empathy, education, and determination are the keys to virtue

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Ishkibal is extremely suspicious of most other Immortals, and seeks to curb their influence. He also believes that Dryads, Prisms, and Solars carry a sort of original sin, that must be redeemed through education. To this end, he spreads Ishkibism across the world.

Personal history

Ishkibal began his mortal life as a younger son of the aristocratic Arzad family in the lands that are now The Holy Republic of Pakray. He spent his early life learning the arts of war, poetry, theology, and business. He looked up to his eldest sister, Anzaya, who took over administration of the city-state at a young age alongside their mother, Queen Chana. Anzaya recognized that his potential was wasted, and prepared an adventuring expedition for Ishkibal to earn glory abroad. Something of a romantic, Ishkibal dreamt of adventuring abroad and doing good. He chose the furthest site of conflict he could- the distant city of Kenahai, which had come to Pakray with news of a brutal demonic invasion. The expedition was named "The Plume of Liberty".   Preparing to embark, Ishkibal and his crew were accosted by Halcyon, who demanded that he turn back. He responded firmly but fairly, and the prince and the Architect sat down to talk and negotiate. These negotiations slowly blossomed into something of an alliance, and Halcyon helped Ishkibal navigate the politics of Kenahai. The chaos there was not as clear-cut as Ishkibal had imagined: the town had been selling local dryad captives into slavery rather than back to their families for ransom (as was traditional) and the dryads were waging a war of vengeance.   Halcyon gave Ishkibal a useful tool- a powerful warhorn previously belonging to Anzaya, enchanted to allow negotiating armies to understand one another when sounded- and contacted the dryad leader, Autumn, to prepare peace. The peace is shaky but successful, and Ishkibal is able to track down and recover all but 10 of the captives. Ultimately, Ishkibal took over Kenahai by force after an attempted betrayal by the local monarch, Sila. This process was messy and took years of work, but peace was made. Ishkibal fell in love with Kenahai, adopting the local culture and marrying the war chief of Kenahai (a non-binary human named Rosha Alevad). For his service, Halcyon blessed the city of Kenahai and offered divinity to Ishkibal. It took many years, but eventually he agreed and ascended to the Lunar Pantheon.
