Katherine Desfade Weatherby
Lady Weatherby is the inventor of the DWMST method for testing power carrier concentration and the only known Drainer to ever teach at Everdon Academy. She was appointed amid much controversy by King Leonard as a professor of biology.
Though I have taken one class of hers, I do not claim to have much particular personal information about her. This article will focus on her various contributions to Crathlian society through the lens of historical significance.
Personal History
Family
Katherine Desfade Weatherby was born to Bryan Weatherby Desfade and Flora Desfade Weatherby in 1269, their third child and their first daughter. It is an oft-noted fact that both of her parents were born out of wedlock. She has three siblings, all brothers. The oldest, Neil Weatherby Silvermist, born in 1263, is a Class 3 Paragon of non-noble status. He has two children; neither are Drainers nor Healers. Alan Desfade Weatherby is a year older than his sister. He is a Class 2 Paragon who is unmarried and childless. Like his sister, he attended Everdon Academy. Two years younger than his sister, Maxwell Desfade Weatherby is a Class 1 Paragon like Katherine, but did not score high enough to attend Everdon. He was sent to Culduff instead to be trained. He has three children, all Drainers. Katherine remains unmarried and childless. She has no known relationships outside her family, with the possible exception of shapeshifters she met during schooling.Education
After her power carrier concentration was determined to be an unprecedented 147.21, Weatherby was sent to Everdon Academy for schooling. Like her mother, she was assigned a separate black uniform to set her apart from other students and was not allowed to touch anyone without their permission, along with other regulations. She graduated with average grades in 1288.Employment
From 1288-97, Katherine Desfade Weatherby conducted research for the DWMST, the method for testing power carrier concentration which was adopted by the Senate as the standard in the Testing Act of 1296 on Queen Alexandra’s recommendation. During this period, she held prison jobs in several major cities across Crathlia. In August 1295, Katherine accompanied the shapeshifter Aoibheann to Inis Baile Mor. She was recommended as an ambassador by the Council of Elders during this visit, which was confirmed by the Senate in January 1297. After visiting the islands twice more, she resigned from this position in 1299. Katherine took a teaching job offered by King Leonard at Everdon Academy in summer of 1302. Weatherby's work on the DWMST is considered her most significant, considering that it revolutionized the way we test power carrier concentration. Instead of the large blood draws and complex analyses of the 1200s, we now use a simple prick of the finger and get results nearly instantaneously--and Katherine Desfade Weatherby developed this method singlehandedly.Social
Contacts and Relations
During her work as an ambassador on Inis Baile Mor, she gained favor with both the Council of Elders and the shapeshifters. Fiachra notes that she could block telepathy better than any human exempting the Dissipators that he's ever come into contact with. Other than her aignaoithe contacts, she has a friend in King Leonard, who has told me that he always hoped he could make up for the way everyone treated her at school (his words, paraphrased). Considering that he was the one to fight for her job at Everdon, he has long been an advocate for her. Otherwise, her connections in Paragon society are few, due to her being a Drainer.Family Ties
Considering that the Weatherbys hardly considered her father Bryan a part of their family (due to his being illegitimate) before he married a Drainer and disowned him and his line after he did so, Katherine has little acknowledged family outside her parents and siblings. Her grandmother Molly Desfade was an infamous Drainer rebel.
