New Thostenburg Settlement in Frigranden | World Anvil

New Thostenburg

Twelve subterranean levels bustle under wrecked remains of the metropolis Thostenburg after its decimation by a volcanic explosion 300 years ago by Mount Ridder. New Thostenburg has thrived and developed separately from the rest of Frigranden since that catastrophe. A diverse collective of Humans, Half-Elf, Half-Orcs, Halflings, and Goblins live and work together to survive underground. The last remaining Elf from the time of the exodus underground sits on The Council of New Thostenburg with eleven other leaders.   The heat rises from thermal energy below, the air and water are magically scrubbed of toxins, and food is grown using artificial light. The systems inside New Thostenburg were developed out of necessity and desperation, and are unknown by the rest of Frigranden. Only now are outsiders making their way into New Thostenburg from shafts drilled for mining by the Northern Tribesmen nearest the ruins of the old city.

Architecture

Twelve reinforced levels dug into solid earth over hundreds of years. Sections of the first four levels predate the catastrophe, and the rest have been added by slow development over the last 300 years. Levels are separated by winding staircases and pully-driven lifts. Sections have reinforced doors to section off areas with fire, poisoned air or other immediate hazards. Meticulous records are kept of the comings and goings of residents on the original four floors, but lower levels are laxer with the rules unless residents are being harmed.   Further construction downward ceased after Level 12 due to the proximity of thermal pockets. Instead, levels five and six are being expanded northward, a quarter-mile at a time. This is where one of the construction team found a mine shaft built by the Northern Tribesmen.
