Octestus Species in Evenea | World Anvil

Octestus (OK test uhs)

Octestus are a squid-like race that are descended from the Wyrolithe. Their “body” is protected by an armored shell. Due to their affinity for void and their creepy forms, they are feared by most races. They often use this to their advantage, getting better deals and getting away with crimes due to the overall fear that presides over the general population.   Distribution-wise they are found primarily in Urrudea, where they are found in small communities outside of larger towns or cities. They are seldom seen in larger towns and cities due to the overall fear other races have for this race. Depending on the type of shell they possess, they may also possess different ethnicities and distinct abilities from each other.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Octestus possess a shell from which their cephalopodian bodies form from, but also have ethnical differences depending on the shell shape:
  • Ammonite: With a large shell that curls in like a ram's horn, Ammonites are on of the more brutish of the Octestus, often seen as bullies to those that are outside of their cultures. They possess 10 arms and are much more muscular than their brethren.
  • Orthostine: With a large, often straight shell that looks similar to a lance, Orthostines are the largest of the Octestus. They are on average double the size of their brethren.
  • Plectrodomite: With slight curves to their shell, Plectrodomites are on the smaller size for an Octestus, but they also are surprisingly quick and stubborn. Beware making enemies of these Octestus.
  • Ascobanese: Having odd, almost bell-shaped shells, Ascobanese are a variant that prefer to live in the Cedar forests of Urrudea and know how to quickly navigate them.
  • Belmoabite: Having tapered-inset shell, Belmoabites are a variant of Octestus that look quite similar to squids with thicker, sturdier shells.
  • Nautidianite: Having an almost circular shell, Nautidianites can completely close themselves within to defend themselves against attacks of their enemies.
  • Decanaanite: With internalized shells, the Decanaanites are a variant of Octestus that possess tentacles and share their commonalities to squids that the Belmoabites also possess, however the thing that separates them from Belmoabites is the ability to camoflage!
  • Octomaritan: Completely lacking shells, Octomaritans are a variant of Octestus that resemble octopi, and like their resembling creatures, can change the texture of their skin, mold themselves int o different shapes, and even fit through holes the size of their beaks!

Growth Rate & Stages

Octestus start life as eggs that hatch at about 12 weeks or so and become larvae that require large amounts of salt to survive. This often means that they start life in tide pools, salt marshes, or even ephemeral salt lakes tended by parents. The larvae mature at around 2 years old.

Ecology and Habitats

Octestus require wet and salty environments to live properly, but are most common in Urrudea, which is consistently an hot and dry area. This means that a majority of Octestus communities revolve around the little water there is and trade heavily for the salts their bodies require.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Octestus are almost exclusively carnivorous, but do heavily season their foods with various salts, herbs, and other seasonings. They really enjoy crustaceans.

History

Octestus are a offshoot of the ancient Wyrolithe, a race of Void or Wraith dragons that once held a great empire that spanned across Evenea, but fell due to this race exerting too much pressure onto the inhabitants of areas they couldn't easily control. The Octestus are descended from Wyrolithe that had access to psionic powers, creating something very similar to Illithids in the rest of the Multiverse.
