Amphibanne (Ahmfee bahnyae)

Amphibanne are a race of amphibians that live in the swamps, bayou, plains, forests, and rivers of Eveynjar. Due to their amphibian nature, they are considered to be one of the most unique races of Evenea. They range from the more common varieties, such as the frog-like Ranabane and Toad-esc Bufobane, to the exotic and unusual Leposbane, mud-puppy like Axolobane, and worm-like Caecibane. Like the Scorpaeus, Amphibanne go through multiple stages of life, starting out as tadpole infants, then becoming full adults after an in-between phase.   Due to their amphibian nature, Amphibanne have to worry about drying out. Each subrace has to worry about different problems, but they nevertheless are what they are. Though this is a problem, it also presents a unique bonus. Whenever water is needed as a medium for a spell, they can whip some of the moisture from their skin.   Their skin has other special properties. One is that due to the relative thinness of the skin, they can breathe through it, even underwater. The other amazing thing is that it can protect them from the heatsense of predatory creatures and Naagaea.   Distribution wise, Amphibanne are found in Yllithr, Kalukkenjar, the Kalth, and Hallojar. Though they are often an uncommon sight, they are welcome as performers, often more agile and skilled than most other races. With their high level of affinity for shadow magic, this makes them terrifying assassins, as they often look too cute to do any lasting damage.

Basic Information

Anatomy

All Amphibanne possess thin, wet skin and covered ears, however morphology varies between ethnicity:
  • Axalobanne have an appearance similar to axolotls, mudpuppies, sirens, or hellbenders and live mostly aquatic lives, coming on land only for trade or adventure.
  • Bufobanne have an appearance similar to toads, they have poison-filled warts that they can use to deal extra poison damage when damaged.
  • Caecibanne have a noodle-y appearance similar to caecilians, including secreting a mucus from their bodies that nauseates their enemies.
  • Leposbanne have an appearance similar to prehistoric amphibians like diplocaulus, microbrachis, adelospodylus, diceratosaurus, oestocephalus
  • Ranabanne have an appearance similar to frogs and have the ability to jump across large distances.
  • Salabanne have an appearance similar to salamanders and have an immunity to fire damage.
  • Temnobanne have an appearance similar to Eryops, Prionosuchus, Siderops, Mastodonosuchus, Koolasuchus, or Gerrothorax, Temnobanne are often more muscular and bony than their kith.

Growth Rate & Stages

Amphibanne lay eggs that hatch in approximately 1 month as tadpoles, which transform into an adult at about two years of age.

Ecology and Habitats

Amphibanne require a source of fresh water so they can wet down every so often.

History

The Amphibanne are descended from Shacken immigrants to Eveynjar that landed in Zuraor 5000 years ago. The ancestors of the Amphibanne were Shacken that had refused to manifest their draconic powers, and as such their latent magic reacted with the natural magic of Zuraor, transforming their descendants into the Amphibial folk they are today.

Amphibanne, the Amphibian Folk

Amphibanne are a race of amphibian folk that prefer life in the swamps, bayou, plains, forests, and rivers of Eveynjar. Due to their amphibious nature, they are considered to be one of the most unique races of Ethenrea. They range from the more common varieties, such as the frog-like Ranabane and Toad-esc Bufobane, to the exotic and unusual Leposbane, mud-puppy like Axalobane, and worm-like Caecibane. Despite each subrace being often vastly different from one another, all Amphibanne seldom express difference between these different forms, showing a camaraderie that most clan or subrace Beast Folk show to those of different subraces or clans. This unitedness is what allowed these small amphibians to make one of the largest unified region in Eveynjar: the Islands of Zuraor.

Distribution wise, Amphibanne are found in Yllithr, Kalukkenjar, the Kalth, and Hallojar. Though they are often an uncommon sight outside of Kalukkenjar, they are welcome as performers, often more agile and skilled than most other races. With their high level of affinity for shadow magic, this makes them terrifying assassins, as they often look too cute to do any lasting damage.

Amphibious Skin

Due to their amphibian nature, Amphibanne have to worry about drying out. If they don't moisturize within a certain amount of days, the Amphibanne will begin to go through the symptoms of dehydration and will die within a week. Though this can be a problem, it also presents a unique bonus. Whenever water or a liquid is needed as a medium for a spell, they can whip some of the moisture from their skin.

Their skin has other special properties. One is that due to the relative thinness of the skin, they can breathe through it, even underwater. The other amazing thing is that it can protect them from the heatsense of predatory creatures and Naagaea.

Between Light and Shadow

Descendants of the Shacken, a draconic people of the Diiv Anne attuned to the power of Shadow Magic, the Amphibanne are incredibly resistant to many of the Illusions and effects associated with Shadow Magic. Though none know when the Amphibanne settled the Isles of Zuraor or how they got there, many archaeological studies have found the Amphibanne's presence in the isles to have a similar diaspora to the first settlements of Indeljar or Yandaijar, making their presence one of the first post-fall colonizations on the continent of Eveynjar. However, probably due to the arising of two Elven super-powers north and south of the Isles of Zuraor raiding the Amphibanne settlements, it wasn't until their allying with their distant brothers of the Kah'luk that the Amphibanne could hold their own against the Elven invaders.

Unified Lands

Despite their past with their Elven abusers, the Amphibanne seem to care little about race, preferring to see others as individuals and accept them for their differences, something the peoples of Fahliilenjar adopted in facsimile to their froggy neighbors. This has lead their lands to having much more diversity than their more human-centric cousins in the lands of Manoko. Due to the vast amount of races in the Isles of Zuraor, most cities are vast and bustling, sporting all sorts of folk at all times of day. Even though there are lots of different ethnic groups in these islands, it seems most have picked up the same ideals as their amphibian cohorts, making the Isles of Zuraor one of the most laid-back and fast-growing regions in the entirety of Eveynjar.

Amphibanne Names

Like the Kah'luk, the Amphibanne naming system starts with their familial names and then their personal names. That being said, due to the way their voice boxes are made, most Amphibanne names have highly pronounced vowels and soft consonants.

Amphibial Skin

Most Amphibanne need to stay moisturized, else deal with repercussions. If an Amphibanne does not moisturize within 3 days, it will gain a level of exhaustion which doesn't go away until they spend the equivalent of a short rest submerged or at least soaking in freshwater. The Amphibanne will continue to gain levels of exhaustion this way until they finally succumb to dehydration.

Swimming in saltwater has the same effect as being dehydrated, except it happens every hour while swimming in the substance.

On the flip side, as long as you are properly hydrated, you have the following advantages:

  • You can breathe underwater indefinitely.
  • Your skin hides your body heat. You are invisible to enemies that rely entirely on Heatsense.
  • If a spell requires you to use water or a similar substance as a medium, so long as you are hydrated, you can use the moisture on your skin as the medium.

Slippery Skin

Due to the slippery nature of your skin, if you have hydrated within the past day, you have advantage on checks to end the grappled or restrained conditions on yourself.

Sticky Skin

As your skin dries out, it causes the mucus the coats your body to become more useful for the purposes of climbing. As long as you have spent a day or more unhydrated but not to the extent of dehydration, your skin allows you to stick to surfaces and objects with ease. You gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed, and have advantage on checks or saving throws that attempt to disarm you.

Semiaquatic

You are the pinnacle of amphibiousness. You have a swim speed of 35 ft.

All Amphibanne have the following general traits

Head. All Amphibanne have bulging amphibian eyes, internal ears covered in a thin layer of skin, rows of tiny, very sharp teeth, and very sticky tongues.

Body. Almost all Amphibanne are short in stature, barely reaching sizes of 3 ft, with the Leposbanne and Tennobanne reaching more moderate sizes of 5 - 5 1/2 ft in height.

Limbs. All Amphibanne have webbed digits, giving them incredible swim ability, though some like the Caecibanne have much smaller limbs.
