Crockorus (Croh core us)

The Crockorus are a race of crocodiles that live in the rivers, swamps, beaches, bayou, and marshes of Southern and Central Eveynjar. They are also found along the warm coastlines that can be found in Valoreum. They live in close-knit tribes that generally keep to themselves. Though they live in those tribes, they always help those in trouble. Also, like the Crocodilians they look like, they never miss out on an opportunity. They are fierce defenders of their home, and as such, they are adept at the use of piercing weapons and Water magic.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Appearance-wise they appear as bipedal crocodilians with dexterous hands.

Genetics and Reproduction

Crockorus reproduce by eggs, and their eggs are kept in a communal hatchery. Crockorus eggs are cared for by all the mothers in their community, and know the sound of their mother's voice before they hatch, which takes about 40 or so weeks to hatch. They generally lay one to two eggs per clutch.

Growth Rate & Stages

Crockorus grow quickly, being considered adults at age 10, but can live up to 70-100 years. During that time they continue to constantly grow, from small size of about 3-4 ft to much larger sizes, reaching heights of 10-12 ft.

Ecology and Habitats

Crockorus preferences for living environments depend on their ethnicity.
  • For the Rauibasque, they prefer to live in environments that are semi-arid or desert-like.
  • For the Aetorilleaux, they prefer the grassland environs of Hallojar and Urrudea
  • For the Notoubre, they prefer the Kalth to any other region.
  • The Gavialier prefer the eastern nations of Kalukkenjar, Yllithr, and Fahliilenjar
  • The Alligavet prefer the central and western nations of Yandaijar, Hallojar, Urrudea, and Empyria
  • The Crocomier don't have much of a preference, but prefer to be in warmer and wetter environs, though there is a large population in Urrudea.
  • The Thalattodaeu almost live completely among the waves.
  • The Sebeceyette prefer Valoreum, but can also be found in the Kalth and Fahliilenjar,

Dietary Needs and Habits

Crockorus cuisine focusses on meats, eggs, and a variety of plants that grow in and around the water. Quite often, these dishes are spice-heavy, frequently using an assortment of strong spices like cayenne and black pepper.

Major Organizations

Though a majority of Crockorus prefer to live their lives in small communities, it is not uncommon to see them in mercantile shops or businesses as their crocodilian faces don't show emotions as well as other beast folk (this just gives them a good poker-face, nothing else!).  The largest organization the Crockorus have seemed to have made is a city in Empyria known as Gane'Kamault, where they combined forces with Bould Raptoran Clan (Gane) to fight off invaders from Indeljar.

Beauty Ideals

Crockorus enjoy applying makeup, tattoos, and piercings to their thick hides, often with families having their own unique styles.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Musical ability is heavily relied upon for courtship in Crockorus communities. Singing and playing brass instruments are common practices in their culture, and when they want to impress a lady or man, putting the skill into practice late into the night, especially on holidays.

Crockorus

The Crockorus are a race crocodile folk that generally live around most waterways of Eveynjar and some parts of Valoreum, though it seems that Indeljar is too far north for them. They live in close-knit tribes that generally keep to themselves, though the Crockorus as a who are said to be lively and thoroughly enjoy the sound of music and celebrations.

Patient and Ruthless

Most individuals within the Crockorus are very patient folk, easily able to wait for the right timing on conversations or hunts to strike. Playing as a Crockorus, it is important to not this patience while role playing the croc folk, potentially using Determination and Tactics more than you would persuasion or deception to get your point across. The best part about this is, that in combat, this can apply to how you attack, focusing on one enemy, and then changing target only once the current target is vanquished.

Incredibly Durable

All Crockorus have the incredibly tough hides of crocodiles, giving them a much more reptilian appearance than even Saurians or Testoideans. This hide is a combination of scutes and osteoderms that make your hide like trying to pierce chain mail. This incredible natural armor makes Crockorus incredibly hard to damage, but also make them much slower on land.

Deal Makers

Like all on Ethenrea, the Crockorus have a storied past, dating back to the Fall of Valoreum. On the sidelines until the fall of the nation of Wolfenholm at the hands of the Raptoran, the Crockorus quickly allied themselves with the invaders, making incredibly strong pacts in the places they cohabitated. The most notable of these pacts is called the Amorim Pact, where the Gane Clan of the Crockorus made a pact with the Kama Clan of Dhasha Raptoran, creating a small republic that would eventually be taken over by the Empyrians.

Lifestyle

An average Crockorus community generally don't exceed 200 individuals, though more urban Crockori may live in more dense populations. Crockorus start their life off as eggs, hatched carefully by their devoted parents. The Crockorus' gender, much like crocodiles, is heavily dependent on the temperature they eggs were incubated at.

On maturity at 15 years, many Crockori strike it out on their own, either finding a new community to better suit their needs or making a new settlement.

Crockorus Names

Crockorus names consist of a personal name and a clan name. Each Clan is associated with a region rather than a particular subrace (called tribes), though some clans may only include one tribe due to that tribe or clan's isolation. All Crockorus speak a language known a Crench, and all Crockorus names are from that language.

According to Rymill, Crench has been described as French with the hissing, snarling, and bellowing sounds of crocodilians.

Semiaquatic

Due to your semiaquatic nature, you have a 30 ft swim speed and can hold your breath for up to 20 minutes on a single breath.

Grappling Bite

You can use your fanged maw to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with it, the strike deals 2d6 + Might modifier piercing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage.

Additionally, you can strike with these jaws as a bonus action, attempting to grapple the target. If the attack hits, it deals its normal damage and the target is grappled by you (Escape DC = 8 + your Might Modifier + your Unarmed proficiency). This can be done a number of times equal to your Might modifier.

Low Bellow

Whenever you speak Crench, you emit low bellows that most humanoids cannot hear. Any creature with tremorsense or keen hearing can hear the sounds you make up to 1 mile away. If they understand Crench, they know what your bellows mean.

Due to this, you have a tremorsense of 60 ft.

Natural Armor

You have tough, scaly skin covering osteoderms and scutes. While you aren't wearing armor, you base AC is 13 + your Fortitude modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.

All Crockorus have the following features:

  • Head. All Crockorus have strong, durable crocodilian skulls, though physical features vary from tribe to tribe.
  • Body. All Crockorus have thick, scaly hides that protect them from the creatures and monsters they share the world with. Due to the presence of their tails and the length of their skulls, they often have a hunched appearance. Though the average adult height of a Crockorus is around 5-6 ft, they don't stop growing their entire life, and some extreme cases have been known to grow to 9 ft tall.
  • Limbs. All Crockorus limbs are stocky and end with mild webbing in their hands and feet. Some, like the Thalattodeau have more derived limbs for swimming or like the Aetorilleaux are more for digging than swimming.
  • Tails. All Crockorus have thick tails that aid in swimming.
