City of Renn

Renn is the unofficial military capital (and former political capital) of the Kingdom of Erdantia, and the most populous city on the Peninsula of Erdantia and second-most populous in the Kingdom overall. It owes its success to its situation as a large coastal settlement on the lower half of the Peninsula of Erdantia, making it an ideal stopping point for trade with Eseris and Erdantia's Southern Colonies.

Demographics

Like the rest of the Eastern Erdantia Area, the vast majority of Renn's inhabitants are of the Erdantine ethnicity, with a small minority of Avenic Elves and Gaenic people. With the city's trade links with Eseris being as strong as they are, there is also a reasonably large minority of Eserisians.

Government

The city sits within a Council Holding, a holding in the Kingdom of Erdantia operated by officials rather than a lord, one of six council holdings in the country. It has several other towns and villages within its administrative holding, including Sinco and Melva.

Defences

Renn is completely surrounded by walls that encircle the city by land, and forming a large sea wall by sea, which serve to protect the city from both natural and human threats. A large fortress sits on the southern side of the city, Renn Castle, which is the former home of the Monarch of Erdantia and now houses both the Renn Council and the Old Guard. In the recent Siege of Renn in the War of Eserae, the city suffered major damage, and a large portion of Renn Castle was destroyed, as well as most of the sea wall. Repairs are ongoing, but progress is being made.   There are two major law enforcement groups within the city. The first is the Renn Guard, which provides enforcement to the entire holding. The second is the Old Guard, the former royal guard of Erdantia's royal family, now acting mostly ceremonially, but incorporating aspects of law enforcement as well as protecting Renn Castle.

Industry & Trade

Renn's geographic location gives it several advantages to guarantee its importance. It is capable of conducting trade and providing transport across the southern half of the Peninsula of Erdantia, as well as conducting trade with Eseris. It's proximity to a river allows it to bring down ore from the nearby holding of Erial, and it is an important node in trade routes involving Aven. It is one of the easternmost port towns in Erdantia, making it ideal for a naval base in the event of a war with the Syndalan Empire. It is capable of conducting trade and transport with two of it's three naval districts, the Southern Colonies and the Eastern Colonies, the latter of which is an important part of Erdantia's safeguards against a Syndalan invasion.

Infrastructure

Renn has a large port, with eight cargo cranes, and a well-developed road system. Much of the mechanical power required for industry is powered by waterwheels, with the city taking full advantage of its geographic location.

History

The city was initially founded by the Cordaint Empire on the site of an Erdantian fishing village voth as a trade point and to serve as a naval base to prepare for a planned invasion of Eseris, but it soon became the heart of the Great Rebellion, the civil war in which the inhabitants of Erdantia declared independance. After the war ended, it became the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Erdantia, but eventually lost its status as capital to Drago, a decision made by King Markus Tyler in 1441 made in order to strengthen trade with Emmerion and to place the capital closer to the center of the nation in response to Erdantia expanding westwards into Orlend.

Geography

Renn sits next to the Eastern Ocean, on the large areas of flat land south of the Long Mountains.
