Emmerion

Emmerion is a large nation north of the Eliron Region, west of Yannurrin, and north-west of the Kingdom of Erdantia. It is known for its powerful military and strong, trade-based economy, rivalling even other superpowers of Orlend such as the Kingdom of Erdantia, Yannurrin and Shadra.

Structure

The organisation structure of Emmerion bears resemblance to that of Shadra, divided into six provinces, five of which are ruled by a feudal lord and the remaining one, which sits on the south of the west coast of Emmerion, is controlled by the King (although in practice the usual operation and decision making of the remaining province tends to be operated by an official, usually a lesser feudal lord).

History

Emmerion has its roots as one of several provinces maintained by the Cordaint Empire, referred to as the Province of Emmer, situated just north of the province of Cordaintia, west of Yannur, and south of Kelbrike.   Emmerion as an independent state, like so many nations around it, was formed from a power vacuum created by the collapse of the Cordaint Empire. Its first ruler was a Cordaintine military leader formerly having led the fight against resistance efforts in the Province of Elir, who led large parts of what remained of the Cordaint army to take control of a large area north of and including the Empire's ruined capital, Borio, comprising northern Cordaintia, the entirety of Emmer, and small areas of southern Kelbrike. This line of leaders slowly transitioned into a hereditary monarchy.

Demography and Population

Most of the inhabitants of Emmerion are Cordaintine, with a significant minority of Kelbrike to the north and Erdantines to the south-east. Its largest settlement is Amra, a port city on the south of the western coast of Emmerion, which is the capital of the nation and home to the Amra Palace, residence of the King.   The vast majority of people speak the Emmeri dialect of Cordaintine, with Erdantine and Jaerian spoken as common languages by many Emmeri traders to facilitate easier trade.

Territories

Emmerion has relatively few areas of territory outside of its main body, with the exception of Arletzia, a single city sitting on the other side of the continent within the city of Yannurrin. Historically, Emmerion was granted transit rights specifically between that city and Emmerion across an agreed zone, but with the beginning of the War of Eserae, those rights were first revoked, followed by a Yannur occupation of the city in 1591. After the end of the war in 1594, a peace agreement between Erdantia and Yannurrin included returning the city to Emmerion and reinstating transit rights. The city of Arletzia was returned, and a noticeable Emmeri military presence is now in place, not enough to prevent an attack in future but enough to buy time to send word to Erdantia, which could then provide naval support from Drago.   The Kirinan State of Iru is also under the control of Emmerion, although it is not part of the country so much as it is forcefully held.

Military

One of Emmerion's most important assets is its use of magic in warfare. Emmeri Battlemages differ from those found in nations such as Erdantia in that while many other nations take in people who are already proficient mages and unleash them onto the battlefield, Emmerion takes in magically capable children and trains them in a standardised set of magical practises to form disciplined mages at one of two select academies across the country.   Emmeri Battlemages (save the law-enforcement battlemages of the Northern Watch) are distinguishable from other soldiers by their white surcoats, white-and-gold painted armour, and when not in combat, a silver diadem that sits asymmetrically across the left side of the head.

Foreign Relations

Emmerion has strong ties with the Kingdom of Erdantia, with the two providing economical and military support to one another wherever possible. It keeps good terms with various nations in the Atloan Ocean.   Due to its alliance with Erdantia, Emmerion has fairly shaky relations with Yannurrin (which has very poor relations with Erdantia), although the two have attempted to stay on good terms wherever possible. Emmerion has good reasons to keep relations stable with Yanurrin, as otherwise it would likely lose control of Arletzia, something which occurred temporarily during the War of Eserae.   It has been known for trade protectionism, occasionally using military action in Kirine to protect its interests. This was the case in its annexation of Iru.

Trade & Transport

Emmerion has strong trade links with Erdantia, and engages in trade across the Atloan Ocean. As a result of this, it has very well-developed naval technology. It's main exports are wool and wood, both of which are exported to Erdantia in large quantities, usually using Timra as a stopping point before reaching Erdantia's capital, Drago, or via the Emmeri-held city of Arletzia, which sits on the eastern coast of Orlend within the borders of Yannurrin, again before reaching Drago. It also generates large amounts of revenue from the trade of objects from the Atloan Ocean to Erdantia, as many commodities from there (for example, Kirinan swords or Breklendian metalwork and fauna remains), are considered novel luxuries. Three settlements form very important links in the "supply chain" from the Atloan Ocean to Erdantia. One is a port city to the south of Emmerion's coast. The second is Landria, a condominium (jointly owned territory) city on the border between Emmerion and Erdantia. The third is Arletzia, which provides key trade links with northern Emmerion and is an important stopping point for traders going to and from the Northern Colonies.   Within the Atloan Ocean, Emmerion pays a large role in supplying metals from Erdantia, as well as wool from its own land, as it does with Erdantia.
