Borio

The Great City of Borio is a city straddling the border between Emmerion and Yannurrin. During the rule of the Cordaint Empire, Borio served as its capital.

Demographics

The inhabitants of Borio are almost entirely Cordaintine. They are relatively detached from the rest of the world, the sprawling web of ruins difficult to navigate for most, and have formed something of a separate culture, having been isolated for about 180 years. People of this culture are referred to as "Borian dwellers".

Defences

Borio was and is protected by two concentric thick stone walls, the inner wall higher than the outer wall, although nowadays parts of the wall have fallen.

Borio Castle

A huge castle sits on one of the ridges on the eastern side of the valley, overlooking the city. It is connected to the rest of the city by two large stone bridges, one connecting to a city gate and another to the outer wall. Another three smaller bridges extend to other parts of the wall.

Copernicus Castle

A second, smaller fortification sits where the two rivers join, connecting to two bridges, one across each river, and each equipped with a drawbridge.

Infrastructure

During its height, Borio's infrastructure was the most advanced in the world, with a complex sewage system, well-developed roads, bridges and canals, and enough trade infrastructure to support an empire - which, as a matter of fact, it did. It had an expansive harbour system with three shipyards and fifteen horse-powered cargo cranes. Several large roads extended outwards to the furthest reaches of the empire.   Nowadays, however, that's gone, and all that is left of Borio is ruined relics. Houses lie charred and towers that once reached to the heavens now lie fallen across roads and rivers.

History

Borio is said to be the point where the first Cordaintines were introduced to Elemaran after the War of the Gods. Regardless of whether this is true, is certainly seems to be the point the Cordaint Empire originated from, and is its only documented capital.

Tourism

Borio has become something of a point of pilgrimage for followers of Libran, although border complexities often make travel for people outside of Emmerion difficult, and the ruined state of the city, as well as its large walls (of which the gates were closed at the time of its destruction), make entry and navigation both tricky and hazardous, leading many to simply stop at the ouside of the wall.

Geography

Borio sits in a coastal valley on the southern side of the Emmeri sea, which sits on the western side of Orlend and connects to the Atloan Ocean. It straddles a river which joins from two other rivers towards the city centre, while several others flank each side of it. The city has grown to extend towards each river.
