Reggio Aloria Academy

Reggio Aloria Magic Academy (usually shortened to Reggio Aloria) is the largest of the two magic academies qualified to train students to become Emmeri Battlemages, the other being Arebello Academy. It is situated in the City of the same name, which sits on Orlend's eastern coast and is capital of Emmerion.

Purpose / Function

Reggio Aloria serves to train future Emmeri Battlemages and prepare them for their induction courses. It is one of only two academies permitted to do so, and is state-funded. Like Arabello, it also takes a small role in research, but leaves most of it to other academies without a military focus. While this is by no means an official duty, it has been used in a defensive role in the past, with most of its students at least partially trained in combat.

Denizens

There are a little over 120 students in the academy, with about 40 teachers and 70 staff (which include catering and groundskeeping). There is also a research team of 10, which is also able to teach if necessary.

Alterations

The Building initially took a rectangular shape with two wings to the east and west but is was converted to the cross shape known today in 1532-1538, in which the building underwent major alterations. The alteration was done at the same time as the Emmeri Battlemages Order merged with the Northern Watch, and the Battlemages Order was expanded by a fair amount of personnel and resources. At the same time, there was an additional student accommodation building build to the south of the complex. The aqueduct that terminated in the Academy was also repaired there (with similar repairs occurring across the aqueduct), allowing the fountain to be refurbished and reactivated.

Architecture

The building takes a cross shape, with four wings reaching north, south, east, and west. In the center is a large tower, with smaller towers at the tip of each wing and on the four corners where the wings meet the center. Stone bridges connect the four towers towards the center to the central tower. The entire building is surrounded by a stone wall, and a large, well-maintained garden, which incorporates a fountain powered by an old Cordaintine aqueduct, which runs into the complex from the north-east. The walls are crenelated, but this is far more a display of status than a defensive feature, as crenelation is only available with permission from specific individuals, making it very indicative of wealth.

History

Construction began on the academy in 1485, with the formation of the Emmeri Battlemages Order. It lasted a little over three years, with the building opening in early 1489. It had an initial size of about 55 students, but this number has today grown to over 120.
