Arebello Academy
Arabello Magic Academy, based in the City of the same name, is the smaller of the two magical academies equipped to train people to become Emmeri Battlemages, the other being Reggio Aloria Academy . It is the only one equipped to train members of the Northern Watch, an elite arcane law-enforcement unit grouped under the Emmeri Battlemage Order active across the northern border of Emmerion.
Purpose / Function
The Academy was constructed both as a place for magic-sensitive individuals to train to become a state-sanctioned mage, be it a standard Battlemage, or a Northern Watchman. It also serves as a point for existing Northern Watchmen to sharpen their skills and become more effective, as well as a role in magical research, though not nearly one as large as many other magical academies worldwide, such as Kyras or Merio.
Denizens
The Academy is usually home to over 80 students, of which about 50 would be standard Battlemages and 30 are training to join the Northern Watch. There is also a research body of about eight mages, and 20 teachers. Among the teachers, 12 are assigned to training the Standard Battlemages, and eight are assigned to Northern Watchmen. That said, the divide is not set in stone and teachers commonly train the other section if they are understaffed. While the grounds also has a specialised guard of three watchmen, two battlemages, and six knights, the teachers (and possibly students) would be expected to defend the Academy if it came to it.
Alterations
The Academy has seen two major modifications since its construction in 1445, one in 1485 and the other in 1532. The first saw the building have a low wall built around it, as well as adding two vast wings to the central courtyard, taking about three years to complete. The second added additional towers between the wings and the walls of the courtyard, as well as something of a gatehouse overlooking the entrance, taking four years and six months.
Architecture
The central feature of Arabello is a large circular courtyard, around which the building exists in a circular shape. A gatehouse sits on the southern side, featuring a portcullis and gates, while two large wings extend to the east and west, curving southwards. A large tower sits on the northern point of where each wing meats the area of the building surrounding the courtyard. A low wall surrounds the entire academy, and several utility buildings sit within the wall, disconnected from the main facility.
History
Arabello was initially created in 1445 as a small academy to facilitate a more standardised training system for the Northern Watch, who had previously all received magic training from different backgrounds. It was expanded upon in 1485 to become one of two major academies for the newly formed Emmeri Battlemages (who at that point in time were a separate organisation from the Northern Watch). At that point in time, different parts of the building were used to train each organisation. When the two groups merged in 1532, the building was once again expanded on to form what it is today.
