Aven

Aven, a nation all too abused by its neighbours. Had to fight for freedom from the Cordaint Empire. Had to fight for freedom from Erdantia. Had to fight off Yannurrin and Syndal. Now it's being harassed by Gaen and even Shadra. Amazing it's still successful.
Aven is a small nation that lies on the tip of the Peninsula of Erdantia. Much of the land is taken up by the Long Mountains.

Etymology

The name Aven stems from the Eserisk "Avrin", meaning "nobody", and the Old Erdantine suffix -en, denoting ownership. Aven, therefore refers to "Nobody's land", referring to its roots of having to forcefully claim independence from the Kingdom of Erdantia during the Avenic War of Independence, with the name also symbolising a mixture of Eserisian and Erdantine Culture.

Structure

Aven is lead by the king, but has to run all large decisions through with a council. Interestingly, only 40% of the council needs to agree with these decisions

Culture

Aven has a strong culture of separation from Erdantia, the effects of which are still very tangible.

History

Aven stemmed from a rebellion not long after the Kingdom of Erdantia rebelled from the Cordaint Empire.   The rebellion initiated from concerns over the Erdantian government's treatment of Avenic Elves, who had arrived in the area in the 800s. While views across Erdantia of them were quite hostile, closer to the east (the place where Avenic Elves had the highest proportion of the population), where many had fought alongside humans in the Great Erdantian Rebellion, many had grown to greatly respect them. This divide in attitudes towards the elves is what led Aven to ultimately rebel.   At that point, Erdantia's military was locked in combat with the Cordaint Empire, so were unable to defend.

Demography and Population

The majority of Aven citizens are human, at about 55%. A further 42% are Elves. The majority of these elves are Avenic Elves, refugees from Syndal during the Orcish invasion, with a small minority of Eserisian elves.

Military

Aven has a relatively small military, as it is within the safety of the Kingdom of Erdantia's huge military power.

Technological Level

The north-east of Aven is home to Prendergast Magic Academy, the only magical school in the world to teach Mobile Enchantment, a technique of magical enchantment that involves applying enchantments to portions of fluids, forcing them to act as if they were a solid by preventing the particles of the fluids from moving relative to one another using kinesis. These mobile enchantments usually take the form of luminescent rings created by the caster which can then use them to great effect. Some of the finest mages in the world hail from this school, which is considered to be on-par with the great academies of Erdantia such as Merio Magic Academy or the Kyras Academy. One such mage includes Zahariel Margolis, an Avenic-Argean Enchanter associated with the Silent Knights.

Religion

Most of Aven practices some form of Supradia, with a large minority of Libran practitioners.

Foreign Relations

Aven has very close relations with the Kingdom of Erdantia and Silnear, with a trade relationship. Prior to the War of Eserae, the monarchs of Aven and Gaen were actively seeking to improve relations through a collection of trade deals and the construction of an Avenic embassy in northern Gaen. However, this was ultimately reversed by the war and two two ended at war, with Gaen even launching an invasion of Aven with Shadra, culminating with a siege on its capital.

Currency
Aven uses the Mark, the same currency as The Kingdom of Erdantia and Gaen. Marks are printed and regulated by the Erdantian government, but recognised in Aven.
Major Exports
Aven exports tin and copper in large quantities, two minerals found in abundance in the mountain range that takes up most of its territory. It competes with Erdantia to provide this. It also exports Kesselium, something that has recently become more scarce in Erdantia, and Aven is able to profit heavily off this.
Major Imports
Aven imports many metalworked luxury items from the city-state of Silnear.
Legislative Body
All major laws are written by the reigning monarch, then passed through a council for approval (requiring an approval proportion of 40%), while minor laws are made by said council. In times of emergency (and even then only for cases relating to the emergency), the monarch can bypass the council's approval and pass laws without their consent.
