The Imperial Guard of Ghynzua is a special group of troops tasked with protecting the Empress. They guard the Imperial Palace in Miraiy, where the Empress resides. If she travels outside the palace, a contingent of the Imperial Guard will travel with her for protection. The members of this elite group are the best military force in the empire.
History
Shortly after the inauguration of the first empress of Ghynzua, an Imperial Guard was established. At the time, it was more a display of power towards their enemies than an actual need for protection within the capital. Four trusted companions of the Empress were chosen. They were to hold the title of Imperial Guard. The number of elite guards protecting the palace and empress grew over time, as the need for them became higher.
Recruitment
Recruits for the Imperial Guard come from the ghynzuan military. Those who impress their superiors have a chance of ending up on a list of potential recruits. To become part of the Imperial Guard, a lot more is needed than to be among the best. A soldier's background will be inspected before they are even considered as a potential recruit. After that, they will be contacted and given the opportunity to partake in a series of tests. If they pass those tests, they will be accepted as a recruit and start their training to become an imperial guard.
Female vs Male
In contrast to many other nation's women have always been part of the ghynzuan military. Since the beginning, men have been shunned from important positions in the matriarchal society of Ghynzua. Their military however, has accepted men among their ranks since their founding. This was not always true for the imperial guard, which started out with an all-female cast. Over time, this changed with the emancipation of men. In current day Ghynzua about 1/4th of the Imperial Guard is male. This stands in sharp contrast to other royal guards around the world, where it is rare to see a woman among their ranks.
Ooh, I like this twist on men being in charge! The fact that mostly women have been in charge of this society is a nice touch, especially since that's not the case with the rest of the world. :D
