Guildmaster Webley M. Tealeaf
Physical Description
Webley does fit the bill of the normal fitness of a Halfling, though he is surprisingly more athletic than most. He is certainly very dexterous, which helps him in a variety of tasks, be it shooting his bow or making his cocktails. He is also, like Milo, slightly more muscular than the average Halfling. Like his father, Webley grew in strength due to the laborious work in breweries and taverns when shifting crates and barrels. Though, even with all of this, he is still recognisable as a halfling with his fairly round belly that nicely rests on his beltline.
Webley usually does fit the bill for classic facial features of a Halfling. With the large round nose, reddened by excessive drinking, and a large round chin; both features that were inherited from his mother's side. His thick brown hair that always bends into a curve on one side was a gift from his father's side. The most recognisable feature of his face is his deep green eyes, the small part of him that can easily identify him as the son of Harana who shared a similar feature.
While out on the road with his adventuring friends, Webley can be seen to wear a loose, brown, cotton blazer; a fairly expensive white shirt; rough, brown trousers; ankle-high, black boots; and his belt, adorned with the Tealeaf crest. Though, when on Guildmaster business, he likes to be presentable, especially when he has plenty of money to put to use. He wears the finest silks, cottons and leathers that money could buy, but never anything extremely flashy.
A once, shabby-looking, cheap, halfling made longbow, is now a symbol of Webley's power. While Webley already had some skill with a bow, the enchantments on his bow made his attacks much stronger, and with added sentience given by the skilled mages of the Skelton Merchants, a good companion.
Mental characteristics
It was a warm summer’s night. Little Webley was in his room playing with his toy soldiers when he heard shouting in the other room. He opened his small door just enough for him to see out, just a crack. It was his mother and father arguing. His father,
Milo Tealeaf, was a muscular figure, but short for the race, reaching only 2.7 feet tall. He always liked his collar up and spiked around his neck. His mother,
Harana Tealeaf, was a beautiful woman with long brown hair. They were arguing. His dad had just returned from an evening at the local tavern and he was obviously drunk. His dad shouted so loud that it made Webley scared. He closed the door quickly and ran to his bed. He had no idea what was going on, after all, he was only five. The shouting continued until there was an ear-achingly loud crash of a breaking bottle and a scream followed by a quiet whimper.
The next morning several sheriffs of Webley’s village came to collect Webley. His dad was reluctant for him to go but was easily pushed away. Webley was picked up and but on the back of a cart not knowing if he would ever see his parents again. He was sent to a boarding school owned by the Brewers’ Guild called, quite obviously, the Brewers’ Guild Academy.
While Webley was away at his school, every year, on his birthday, Webley got a present from his father. He had got a junior brewing kit as his sixth birthday present, he also got a bow when he was twelve and a belt with the tealeaf crest when he was fourteen. The belt was the last present he ever got from his father. After his graduation Webley wanted to see his father in his old home a couple of islands over from the academy, in the city of Dunreen. It was one of the biggest halfling centred islands, it wasn’t a very large city in comparison to those in Cresteria, but still it was large by halfling standards. As he walked through the streets he started remembering all the sights from his childhood: there was the grand square where Webley’s mother went to for countless council meetings and there was a small tavern where Webley’s father went for countless drinks with his so-called ‘friends’. Webley distinctly remembered his address: 12 Barley Lane. He followed the small winding path from the docks to the houses. He walked across the village green and onto Barley lane. He knocked on number 12 and a middle age halfling woman answered it. Not knowing who this person was, Webley asked where his father was.
‘You must be Webley, the young tealeaf,’ the woman said, ‘I'm sorry but your father hasn’t lived here for many years...I-I thought you would know.’ the woman hesitated, ‘He’s dead, lad’. Distraught with the news, Webley left the island for the last time where he sailed north to his new tavern.
Webley had been taken to a large mixed-race boarding school called the Brewers’ Guild Academy school. It was a large brick building surrounding a green lawn where countless pranks are made, and countless drunk students are found. Webley liked this school. There were many subjects like: tavern management, history of the drink, cocktail and brewing classes, etc. He took a strong liking in one club though: outdoor survival and scouting. This is where he learnt his skills to become a ranger. The teacher in charge of the club, Roscoe Greenbottle, was the closest thing Webley had to a mentor figure when he was growing up. Webley had several friends at the school, there was a halfling called Lyle, a human called Wellby, and a human called Tim-tom. Webley liked to spend his free time either getting drunk with his friends or practicing archery on the lawn.
When he was eighteen, he graduated from the academy, with a speciality in cocktails and tavern management. He was top of the class in most of his subjects, though Webley and his friends were never the best behaved.
After Webley's graduation, and his visit to his childhood home, he took an apprenticeship in the Grumbling Wanderer. The apprenticeship lasted a year, and it gave Webley the experience needed to be hired at his first Brewers' Guild Tavern: the Pretty Goblin, a primarily cocktail bar. The Pretty Goblin is a a good choice for people who have just begun their career in taverns, this is because of the manager in charge is very lacklustre in his requirements for being hired. Webley, however, stood out among his peers; not only did he have a year of experience, he was also very skilled with making cocktails.
Skill isn't everything in the working world however, you need to be determined to work the long hours and keep a level head. However, Webley isn't always the best at keeping a level head: he is almost always drunk. After only two years working at the tavern he was fired for being drunk on the job. The Brewers' Guild moved him to a position in the Tipsy Horse, one of the Guild's worst taverns.
After a couple of years of Webley working at the Tipsy Horse, Webley was promoted to the manager position because of his close work with the previous manager. Webley had been closely watching the old manager's decisions and had noticed his flaws in the running of the tavern. So after Webley was promoted to the position, the tavern went through many different changes. It quickly rose the rankings of the popular Brewers' Guild taverns. In only a year it had reached the top five taverns. Even though Webley did all of this, he realised that he didn't get any recognition for his actions.
After the use of the deck of many things, Webley suddenly became the Guildmaster of the Brewers' Guild. This placed him in charge of all of the operations revolving in and around the Brewers' Guild. This includes their taverns, breweries and the Brewers' Guild Academy. Now that he became a Guildmaster, he was placed in a position in the Guildmaster council, this is a set of all of the Guildmasters of all the Guilds who control the city of Doriath and the surrounding areas, covering most of the Republic of Cresteria.
While the Knights of Braveheart were visiting the city of Merridale on the Isle of Edel, a raiding orc party attacked some of the outlying buildings. Webley, Taran, Sylinvall and Augenloss rushed to aid the town guard in fending off the invaders. During the havoc of the fight, given that Webley was highly intoxicated, he managed to shoot a fellow party member through the leg. A large orc then rushed at him with an axe, causing him to run in fear. In his panic he ran into Augelnoss, knocking the blind man down. Later Webley would find out that Augenloss was a member of the royal Edel family, making his small mistake into a act of treason. He was only able to get out of the death sentence when Augenloss called on never telling the halfling his name, and therefore promoting the idea of just giving him a geass. The geass made it so that Webley wasn't able to knowingly drink alcohol or do cowardly acts.
Almost every person who lives in Cresteria is fluent in Common, it is a language that everyone needs in order to get by every day. Also, because of his halfling lineage, Webley is also very adept when speaking in Halfling. However his grasp on the dialect isn't as good as it could have been if he was able to grow up with his parents back in Dunreen. This makes for some, however very few, grammatical mistakes in his writing. While attending the Brewers' Guild Academy Webley, under the guidance of his tutor Roscoe Greenbottle, studied monstrosities; this involved their tactics, brief history, and language: deep speech. Though his grip of the dialect is not the greatest, Webley still understands it enough to piece together sentences. Later in his career, a few months into adventuring with the Knights of Braveheart, Webley began his study of dragons. He is now somewhat proficient in lots of knowledge surrounding the beasts, including their language: draconic. Webley had a decent education, one much better than the average commoner in Cresteria. He knows the basics of the history, philosophy and current affairs of Cresteria and its surrounding nations like the Feydom of dire and Kennerheim. Personally, he would view himself as somewhat of an intelligent person, though it would be easy to find someone to outshine him.
Personality Characteristics
Originally, Webley abandoned his position at The Tipsy Horse because he felt he wasn't getting the recognition he deserved from getting his tavern out of the gutter. Out of spite Webley wanted to see how the guild would cope without him. Though over time he developed something of a friendship with these mercenaries, most of them at least, which lead for him to start seeking out and even enjoying his little adventures. Later, after a rapid promotion brought about by the mystical nature of the deck of many things, Webley reached the position he most desired; Guildmaster of the Brewers' Guild. This came with many responsibilities that he had never had before, he now had hundreds, no, thousands of people relying on him. From then on, he knew that he had something to work for, not just himself. On the next adventures from that point, Webley no longer felt he needed to loot the large amounts of gold and gems from hordes they discovered; instead, he decided to collect odd items as memorabilia for his time with the party.
Anyone who even knew Webley for a minute would know that he is an alcoholic. Whether it is the stench of ale or the near-constant twitching of his hand, reaching for a flask tucked into his coat pocket.
Social
It is very difficult for any person to not believe in the Gods, though after Webley found out that Peylore had abandoned many soldiers, including his grandfather, Merric Highhill, after the Split. Allowing for people of all walks of life to die in the hundreds-of-thousands just so one battle could be won. This made Webley feel like the Gods think that they can fight their wars on their own terms, where and when they want, even if it destroys the civilisations of the material plane.
Though he would say that he tries to be humble, Webley quite clearly is very good at what he does, and he knows it. This is one of the many features that makes him somewhat undesirable. Webley's views on his abilities are somewhat odd. It is true that he is great at what he does (both in archery and brewing), however he is often surprised when others match or are even better than him in these skills. It isn't that he thinks that his abilities are greater than they actually are, instead he views others as much less than they actually are. Webley would then often show signs of insecurity by internally denying that what he is seeing is correct and pushing himself to demonstrate his skills; this eases his insecurity for the time being, however the feeling that his abilities are being matched more and more digs into his being.
Tutee (Important)
Towards Roscoe Greenbottle
Being the Guildmaster of a prominent Guild comes with many monetary assets. These include a large weakly income, a large staff, and one of the best rooms in the Guildhall. Currently, Webley has roughly 3000 gold pieces to his name in just currency, in physical assets Webley reaches over tens-of-millions of gold pieces.
Pets
Nippy the Nemicolopterus
Though she was only in Webley's possession for a matter of weeks, Nippy played a large part in teaching the ranger a few lessons in how to live his life; even if no one else knew.
Whilst on a shopping trip in the city of Meredel, the Knights of Braveheart decided to go into a pet shop. Here some of them purchased different animals and beasts. On of these purchases was made by the party's ranger, Webley Tealeaf, who bought a small dinosaur called a nemicolopterus. This small bird-like thing spanned only the width of a human hand (or two halfling hands) so was a great companion to an equally small man.
During the next few weeks of her life, she taught Webley a valuable lesson, how to truly care for something. Sure, Webley had taken care of previous things before, like his old tavern, but never to a living thing; never to something that showed love in return. To a man who was ripped of his childhood and who was thrown straight into adulthood, it was something very new to Webley, something very special.
But sadly, all good things come to an end, and for the relationship between Nippy and Webley this was only after a few weeks. After a powerful and important item was stolen from the party during its auction, Nippy was valuable in remaining flying above the criminal, making sure he couldn't get lost in the large crowd he was running through. Sadly, the thief saw this annoyance above him and shot a precisely aimed crossbow bolt straight through Nippy's body, killing her instantly. Her death was not in vain, however, for she was above him just long enough for Webley to shoot two arrows in quick succession, knocking the man to the ground, allowing for the city guard to arrest him.
Pecker the Owlbear
On the 32nd Anniversary of the Split, a band of entertainers from the Feywild proposed a new game for the festival. They brought up a stadium and organised several gladiatorial fights with some of Cresteria's greatest warriors, and a fey-invented ball game to finish off the day. The combatants for the ball game were the two fey hosts, General Maximillian the deva, and the Knights of Braveheart. They each got into teams of two and the game begun. After a hard-fought battle, the victors were the General and his teammate, Webley Tealeaf.
Instead of a monetary prize, the fey brought out a large box and presented it to the winning pair. Inside, Webley found a large white owlbear cub which he named Pecker.
