However, it becomes solemn once night falls and all fires are extinguished, only the most desperately ill are allowed a fire during the Sun Death Celebration. What follows is an all-night vigil in which the people take turns telling stories and enduring the cold and dark, until the sun rises anew, when new fires are kindled.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Utu’s desire is to see all mortal beings follow the path of good of their own free will. To this end he believes that a just and merciful order must be established. If justice and order are established throughout, then good will flow from it. However, he doesn’t wish to see this imposed on the mortals, but rather for them to come to this of their own free will. He abhors slavery, even slavery in the name of good and justice. So, he guides and encourages, but allows the mortals to choose their own path knowing that some will choose wrongly.

As mentioned apart from his height of nine feet, there is nothing extraordinary about his physical form apart from the nimbus of light that usually surrounds him, and the way his eyes glow, both of which can be noticed and seen in all but the brightest light.

Special abilities

At will Utu can choose to glow as bright as the sun. This has all the normal effects of regular sunlight. He can also Cast Daylight, Flare, Holy Smite, Order’s Wrath, Searing Light, and Sunbeam at will. Personal history

Utu formed from the primal chaos that existed before time and space. It is claimed by some that he was the first of the primordial deities to emerge, though followers of Asmodeus take issue with this claim. It is known that Utu and Asmodeus took to fighting as soon as they were both formed, and their wars rocked the primal chaos and eventually gave birth to Eresu. Initially Eresu ignored the feuding “brothers” instead preferring to shape the primordial chaos into new and interesting shapes. However, she ultimately chose to side with Utu, shifting the balance of power in his favor. Utu, now the supreme power offered Asmodeus a truce, but Asmodeus left to sulk in the pit.

Together Utu and Eresu shaped the First World, with Eresu giving shape to new things and Utu helping her to blend things into a harmonious whole. During the time they were shaping the First World utu and Eresu had several children. The first, Vaalea saw the works of her parents and began to sing a song in honor of what they were shaping. Pleased by this utu incorporated music into their new creation. Next to be born was Mudutu who quickly joined his mother in shaping things. Pleased by his work, Utu bade him to create being to further shape the world. Next to be born were the twins Rohkea and Ukkonen their birth was heralded by a mighty storm that shook the realms, and utu immediately began to train the two in weapons craft hoping their rivalry would cool in time. Finally, the last of their children Sinnis was born and soon began weaving the first spell, that would bring magic to the creation of the gods.

With the completion of the First World Utu called a meeting of all the gods, including Asmodeus and his children, and proposed a grand creation. The gods went to work using what worked well of the First World, but adding new twists, the result was Arda, home of the mortal races. It wasn’t long after this that the gods took to feuding again. Asmodeus and his supporters wanted the newly crafted mortal races to be servants of the gods, while Utu, Eresu, Mudutu, and the other gods of good wished the mortals to be free to shape their own destinies. The war raged for an eon, with neither side gaining an upper hand until at the climactic battle Asmodeus got the drop on Utu and launched an all-out attack that would have destroyed his “brother”. Except Io, the great dragon, intercepted the blow, sacrificing himself in Utu’s place. Realizing the damage their battle was doing not only to the gods, but the mortal worlds, and everything else, Asmodeus and Utu declared a truce. It was ultimately decided that the mortals would have free will, but that Asmodeus and his followers would be free to tempt the mortals into servitude.

In the wake of the Godswar utu decided that the god’s job of shaping Arda was finished, and that the mortal races would continue to shape the world, guided by the gods. Utu himself retired to his palace Khaneh Khorshed at the summit of Mount Celestia and from their he oversaw the work of the other gods, doing his best to prevent them from overtly interfering in the mortal world.

Intellectual Characteristics

It is said that Utu is the wisest of all beings, and that he has knowledge of things no mortal could hope to comprehend. Those who have met his avatars claim that he is sharp witted, and quick to correct, but gently. His companion the great eagle Hamedeedan is said to survey the world every day from dusk to dawn, and report to Utu what he has seen. Thus, Utu is aware of any new developments in the world of mortals.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Utu wishes for all being to of their own free will accept the path of good and order. He is opposed to slavery in all its forms and believes that all intelligent beings should be free to choose their own path. He discourages direct action by the deities of good, except to counter such action by the deities of evil.

However, he is not very adept at crafts, art or performing, and it is said he can’t carry a tune in a bucket.

Likes & Dislikes

Utu loves order and good as well as all the life in Arda, especially the intelligent beings. He is a firm believer in order and ensures that the cosmos keeps to its proper path. He is also good, and believes in helping the weak, defending the defenseless, and building strong communities.

Vices & Personality flaws

If Utu has a flaw, it’s the importance that he places on the community, often to the point that the individual is reduced to little more than a cog in the social machine. Mudutu, Narum and Eresu frequently have to remind him that the individual is important too.

Social

Contacts & Relations

As the leader of the good deities, he is on good terms with all the good deities, and also is on good terms with many of the neutral gods. Social Aptitude

Utu is courteous, genial, and charming. He is supremely confident, almost, but not quite, to the point of being egotistical. He has a very forceful personality and is open and friendly to all. His manners are textbook perfect, and he is always polite, courteous and urbane.

Mannerisms

Utu tends to stand ramrod straight, often making his seem even taller than he is. Unless he is holding Nooraurden in one hand he tends to keep his hands folded in front of him at chest height, almost as if praying.

Hobbies & Pets

His companion, and some say spy, is Talaei Yeki a golden eagle. Talaei Yeki spends the day soaring over Arda, watching the goings on of the mortals, and at night he reports what he observed to Utu, keeping him in the know.

Speech

Utu’s voice is a rich baritone dropping down to bass at times. He speaks at a moderate pace and his voice is smooth and even soothing to some. He has an above average vocabulary; though he seldom uses the full extent of it preferring to gear his words to his listeners.
