Grand-Duchy of Akitania
A large and wealthy country to the south of the Duchy of Letha and the Duchy of Anjev , swearing fealty to the Kingdom of Logres
Structure
The Grand-Duchy of Akitania is a powerful feudal state, ostensibly pledging fealty to the Gallian Crown, but its wealth, size and significant cultural and political ties to other powerful entities allow it to often exist as a de-facto independent state. The Grand-Duchy pays a regular tribute and gives ceremonial deference to the Kind in Per-Ys, but it typically forges its own path.
At the center of the Sovereignty is the Grand-Duc of Akitania and Vasconia, the Northern and Southern halves of the long-unified domain respectively. The Grand-Dug wields an immense amount of power, second only, or perhaps surpassing at times, the King of Gallia. The Grand-Dug always directly rules over the Captal of Buch as their seat, but often holds other titles and holdings throughout the larger region. Administration across the large region is carried out by a network of seneschals, castellans and other ministers.
Local regional Nobility and Gentry oversee increasingly smaller divisions of land and political power, interspersed with independent free-cities and ecclesiastical holdings. However, compared to its neighbors and trading partners to the North, Akitania allows very little overt authority to its merchant class cities, fearing a repeat of the disastrous Dock War. As a result, the nobility is seen as one of the most powerful in Kornôgel. Noble power is event stronger in rural Vasconia to the South, far from the tight control of the urban North.
Public Agenda
Aquitania has shifted politcally in the past few hundred years between fealty to the Crowns of Gallia and Logres through marriages and political alliances. Wealthy and powerful, it maintains a level of self-autonomy and independence, and is often viewed as the most desirable Duchy to control due to its vast resources, temperate climate and magical stability.
